Does anybody know of hospitals in the NYC metro area that accept visiting students for CORE clerkships? Ex - visiting student who wants to do a core selective in medicine. Thanks! 😀

Usually only your school cares where you do core rotations. Mine specifies that we have to do them at a core site but I think you can get special permission to do some elsewhere if you have a compelling reason. The program you visit may have restrictions based on the rotation, i.e. some specialties only take 4th year students, some will only take you from July-December if you are auditioning as part of a residency application or plan on applying to that specialty. If your school is ok with it get in touch with the programs you are interested in an ask or look at their requirements on VSAS.

For our core rotations, our school allows us to go anywhere...the issue is that lots of hospitals outside of our system don't take students who aren't at affiliated institutions.

Is this a third year rotation or fourth? I think a lot of hospitals only take students who have completed third year, that might be your problem. If its a fourth year required rotation you can apply through VSAS and likely go anywhere.

Yeah this is for my third year...somehow some students pull it off, but yeah, it's SUPER difficult.

Ask your coordinators for places that took students in the past. I had a similar situation where I wanted to do an EM elective at an away institution during 3rd year and my school ultimately gave me the names of some places that had taken 3rd years in the past. NYC is pretty competitive but the worst thing they can say is no. If you strike out at the bigger places start calling smaller hospitals that aren't associated with an academic program, they will most likely give you more love. Also try looking out in NJ and CT. Good luck!

Look at that giant list on the portal to see where people have gone for the last 5 years. Rita sent out an email some time ago about how to search for previous sites.
