Cornell a good program?

I recently interview at Cornell, and I loved a lot of things about it. The residents were very friendly, the attendings were great, and everyone seemed to be happy and get along fine. It's in an amazing part of New York, and they offer beautiful subsidized housing. I was somewhat taken aback, however, when they said they only did 80 or so cataracts. I got the impression that the training was somewhat weak. But somehow, all of their residents match at the most amazing fellowships each year. What gives? Will I get good training at this program? I'd appreciate anyone's input.

I have the same question... love this program but would love to hear what people think? Can low surgery numbers be acceptable if you can go onto great fellowships?

Great program because Cornell graduates such as John Flynn, Ed Norton, Bart Mondino, et al had all gotten great fellowships.

I loved the cornell interview day! When I came back and spoke w/several attendings & our PD about the program tho they were not impressed =( it seems the surgical #'s are realistically in the 70s for cataracts (they never openly talked about this problem)... apparently its low surgery across the board. I don't know if they send their residents overseas to try and up their #'s but they really should. I still 'feel' good about it unlike some other places in the NYC (however most of these other 'bad gut feeling' programs are notorious... ie: Nassau). Kberg21 had another post where he ranked the programs... I feel this is pretty accurate. (I cut & pasted it below)

IMHO, NYEE & Columbia are by far the best (for retina columbia is better... i mean its Dr. Chang.; glaucoma is amazing at NYEE w/Dr. Ritch) I have heard this from many other residents at other programs also.

the Cornell cataract # seems higher than the # in MEEI.

what is the # at MEEI? I didn't interview there... I would be really surprised by this as most NY programs (which are considered low volume) are in the 110-120 range ie: downstate/columbia/lukes

the only other program which had #'s like cornell was st. vincents. (i wish i wrote more of these things down during the interview day)

not to be picky but downstate was closer to 200. st vincents was around 100-120 (no VA) per what the senior told me. cornell was around 75

Seemed like their numbers were pretty strong....120 or so. They're expected to increase to 150 once the residents who began the program with North Shore and LIJ already combined make it through. All in all, this seemed like a pretty solid program. Anyone else have any thoughts?

a MEEI resident gets about 60 cataracts in Boston. ABO only requires 45 cataracts for certification.

Wow, really? I feel like I heard higher numbers at the MEEI interview (like 100 or so). I guess the VA in maine makes up some of that difference, but I wonder if it makes up all of it?

Why so few phacos at MEEI? Do they have better numbers in other surgical procedures? What are they doing with all their time 3rd year?

Kberg has posted his rankings of the New York programs....just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me why Mount Sinai might be ranked higher than Cornell? If you had to choose between these two, which would you rank higher? thanks

MEEI numbers are 100-120 cats. Just to clear things up here. This includes two VA's. One in Boston and one in Togus.

Just to clarify did you mean 80 cataracts in the entire residency or per year ?
