Cornell?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Don,

My secondary was complete Oct. 24 and I received a rejection letter postmarked Jan. 25.

Stats:
GPA 3.95cum 3.92bcpm
MCAT 10-10-11-P
SLU undergrad
caucasian male
lots of EC's
confused as to what this school is looking for 😕 although I have an idea (ivy league undergrad institution perhaps?). As you can see I'm still not over this one. (Oh boy, I can't wait 'till the Harvard one comes! 😀 )

Good luck Don, hope you hear good news from them soon! Ciao.

wont you all join me in a cathartic **** cornell.

Ciao.

Hey italianlove-
One of my roommates got into Cornell last year and apparently this is what they want for MSTPers:
3.9 gpa,
39 MCAT
ugrad at Columbia
paper published in J of Biological Chemistry
a billion other EC's

If you haven't been rejected, there's still some hope. I got an interview invite about 2 days ago. Complete very late. Interview in 5 days (i'm in the NE anyway, so i could roll at the drop of a hat). Cathy told me they do have a few more people to go through. Good luck! --Trek

Hi, I'm a Cornell med student--and I'm NOT from an Ivy League undergrad school. Actually, Cornell is one of the few Ivies that takes non-Ivy candidates...at least 25-30% of my class is non-Ivy (low, I know, but at least it's not zero).

My secondary was completed late October, I got an interview notice in February, I interviewed early March, and got an acceptance email/letter one week post-interview.

Average stats for the entering classes are posted on the Cornell (Weill Medical College) web site, I think in "applicant info." (I think the MCAT average is ~33 and GPA 3.7 or so)

My stats:
MCAT 35 (V12, B12, PS11, R)
undergrad GPA 3.98
-No research publications, although 2-1/2 yrs of molecular bio. research
-A LOT of extracurriculars--I minored in art and did a lot of writing (school newspaper, honors projects, etc) and music.

Cornell seems to pick a lot of people with significant experience outside of science (unless you're going for MDPhD, in which case it's pretty hard core science due to Rockefeller Univ). We have artists, an ex-NFL player, Peace Corps volunters, French Lit majors, older students, etc. So if you want to get in, I'd really stress that you are extremely competent in the sciences, but you have significant talent and interest outside the sciences, as well. Oh--they also love international and volunteer experience.

And--let me tell you--Ivy League undergrad means nil. My education at a little-known school was just as good, if not better, even without the prestige--and I've been able to hold my own here.

Good luck! 🙂

Squeek,
I definately agree that an Ivy League school doesn't necessarily guarantee a better/more well-rounded education; though I subtly hinted at this in my post, this is exactly my point. The fact of the matter is, however, that Ivy Leaguers are gonna get interviews with similar stats to mine, so then I get angry.

Dude, this is my first rejection so I'm just venting. I realize that many of the people who are given interviews (like yourself) and ultimately accepted at such a prestigious medical school are gonna have something outstanding about them so that the adcoms can put an interesting story in their admissions booklet about how DIVERSE their class is.

Take care squeek, hope all goes well for you. Ciao. Hey, I speak Italian, is that a significant/diverse talent? Apparently not.
😉

me too. i don't know what they're waiting for. i'm obviously not qualified since i don't have AMAZING EC's, i'm not from an Ivy league school, and i have far from a 3.7

You guys are ****ing stupid. I got an interview a long time ago with much lower numbers than any of you. I really thing that activities matter much more, and if you don't have an interview than you must not have many good activities.

wow JCWells, what's up your a$$ man? sorry if we don't have the great stats you have, but I can see that you will make one great, compasionate doctor....

Well, I think that you are being overly simplistic (and rude to boot).

i hope that you knew that your expletive was gonna be censored. but even if you did, that just makes it worse. taking advantage of it just shows what a rude, wormy little prick you are.

how dare you call us THAT!!!! who the hell are you? you believe you got an interview there because of your "many good" activities. so if we dont' have "many good" activities that makes us bad or something? why curse us out?? and almost blame us for not getting an interview due to not having "many good" activities.

people have been overly kind with you, holding back their true feelings and only calling you rude. you deserve to get your little ass paddled in the principal's office for that stunt!! moreover, i'll bet with that LOSER, rebellious, jerkoff attitude of yours you won't even get into Cornell! (i hope he already hasn't, i hope he already hasn't...)

you should be more careful how you address people here. that's maybe the most insulting thing i've ever read. if you were to ever call me that to my face, without smiling, i'd kick your punk ass!

JCWells,
It's "think," not "thing." Learn English. Stop being a jerk. Congrats on your interview, but it's pricks like you that need to end up as 7th grade biology teachers and not doctors.

Hey man, don't insult 7th grade biology teachers
like that!

Plus, there is the grammatically incorrect "than." But I refuse to contribute to this thread.

JCWells I would love to hear about all of your exceptional activities. If you object to posting them in a public forum would you please message them to me? thanks.

No JCWells, you're the one who is ****ing stupid. You can take your ECs and shove them deep in your a$$. No ****ing arrogant prick comes in here thinking he's the $hit and expects to gain admiration.

Careful JC, there could be admissions officers lurking around, or people who are their friends. You never know. Maybe I'll find out who you are and write a letter to Cornell concerning your obnoxious behavior. No problem, because I love to write, and they are always convincing.

I don't know if you have heard, but many young people (yes, younger than 22) can access the internet. However, even besides that point, we have certain standards at SDN.

got rejection posted on Jan. 25th.

MCAT's V:13-15 P:14 B:13
GPA: 3.2
Exceptional EC's
Exceptional Rec.s

Cornell sucks a big fat one.

Whoa, seems as though I have created a monster here. I was just mad and venting but I'm over it now so let's all just cut out the bickering...I mean Cornell had over 5,000 applicants to fill 101 slots and they can't give all of us qualified applicants (I think I am qualified, though my EC's may not be up to par with JCWells or anything) a decent shot to show them who we are in an interview.

JC--I'm not really sure what motivated you to write those harsh words, but I think you have some serious issues to deal with.

The fact of the matter is that the EC's that I chose to participate in were done because I LIKED TO DO THEM and was worth giving up my free/study time to participate in them, not so that I could have some list to impress people with and show what a diverse person I was. What EC's are, in your ignorant words, "good" is purely subjective. I would hope that if someone has gone to S. America to aid in relief efforts, joined the Peace Corps, etc., that they have done so because they enjoyed it and not to make their AMCAS application over 20 pages long. (Hey, here's a new thread idea...How many pages is your AMCAS hard copy?)

Dr. Don, I'm sorry we have turned this thread into something different than you wanted. I hope that you here something soon and to the rest of you that received interview invites, congratulations! Good luck all. Ciao.

We actually have already done that thread 🙂

Some people have ridiculous number of pages like 28 or something. Mine is something like 12 pages long. Some guy said he had 50 ECs! and then said I was dumb and wouldn't get accepted b/c I only had 12 page long AMCAS..what a little #&$#

Oops...Guess I must have forgotten. Yeah, mine is only a mere 14 pages 🙁 . Perhaps that's why I wasn't granted and interview, not only aren't my EC's "good" I don't have that many of them. LOL 🙂 (I swear I'm over it.) But hey Scoob, didn't you say you got a Cornell invite? With only a 12 page hard copy, sheesh, how in the world did you do it??? 😀 Anyway, congratulations and just let them know (if you get a chance) during your interview that italianlove said he was mad when he got rejected, but now he's over it...sort of. 😉 Take care guys, ciao.

I have to admit guys I had an interview with way below their average stats, but my amcas was I I think 26 pages....I have been out of school for a while and things start to add up.....your theory might not be bad one
