What are people's thoughts on cosmetic limb lengthening surgery? Is this going to start becoming a more common career option as time goes on? Are these surgeries being done at larger hospital centers at all?

There is a push to more formally recognize limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery as a sub specialty within orthopaedics. Typically the folks doing this kind of thing are traumatologists, pediatric orthopedists, or tumor surgeons with training in the ilizarov method, frames, bone transport, soft tissue coverage, or some combination. More recently, the limb lengthening and reconstruction society (LLRS) has made a push to for this type of thing to be recognized in its own right.

In general, most of what these folks are doing is treating post-traumatic or congenital deformity or bone defects. This might involve gradual deformity correction with a fine wire frame, bone transport, arthrodesis and arthroplasty procedures, and yes, bone lengthening. My sense is the vast majority of this is done for the issues above. I think truly cosmetic limb lengthening surgery for cash is a very small percentage of the cases being done (probably rightfully so).
