Just thought I would share the actual cost of the exam with the current PGY-4's so you have a chance to put that money aside. (start saving up now)

Parking: 19.87
Flight: 597.10
Exam: 1910
Hotel: 100
Car: 54.79
Gas: 22.12
Food: 85
================
$2767.51

Day or two off work ? $500-1500

-not cheap to get board certified

How about getting your employer to cover the expenses? I know a few of my fellow PGY4s who have that included in the contract. Still kind of ridiculous how expense it is. What hotel did you stay at?

You can often get your new boss to reimburse you for the cost of the exam, but you are probably on your own for travel and lodging.

My employer paid for my oral board fees.

If you have to pay yourself, the costs should either be reimbursed by employer and then applied to your salary to make it pre-tax, or deducted off your taxes as a business expense. That takes a little bit of the bite out of it.

Next look at the costs for re-certification.

10 years of MOC costs - like around $600/year.
Getting 30 CME's per year - several hundred to a few thousand dollars.
Taking the test again - $1600 + inflation.

Doing all the extra stuff they are requiring now - SAEs, PIP, etc - time.

It's even more of a racket than you think....
