I will most likely be applying next cycle so now I am starting to get worried about how I am going to fund it. So, i figured I'd ask you guys who are currently applying for a rough estimate how much it is costing you (i plan on applying to about 15 schools). Also, how did you afford to apply?

Application to Texas schools plus AMCAS schools plus DO schools, secondary fees, then flying out to schools to interview and having to stay in a hotel when there weren't student hosts available = about $3,000 maybe a bit more.. I try not to think about it.

ok...so on primaries and secondaries alone....

its good to think that on average each school is going to cost you around 100 bucks.

so if you are applying to 15 schools...then think that the cost for applications and mailing them will come up to be around 1600 dollars.

this is obviously not including interview costs and such....
let say you get invites to about 1/3 of your schools....hence 5 interviews....and you go to all 5. just to be safe....give it about 300 dollars a flight.....1500 dollars....

now hopefully these schools all have student host programs but usually there are a few schools that dont have em....but lets just say you spend 50 dollars a night.....hotel fees or taking student out to dinner, taxi or whatever....250 dollars or so....

so approx...3500 dollars would be a safe figure to focus on.

so id work over the summer or over the school year if it possible and save up. save money you get for christmas, birthday, etc...
basically you will have to be very good about saving money and not spending too much if you are not going to get any parental money to help you out during this process....

good luck yo...

I'm too ashamed to post how much I've spent...🙄

Just say I look forward to my pay check every 2nd week(I get paid biweekly).

$3712

Here's the depressing breakdown:
Kaplan MCAT course - 1349
MCAT registration - 185
AMCAS fee - 600 (16 schools)
AACOM fee - 375 (DO schools, used as backup)
secondary fees - 1085 (12 allopathic, 2 osteopathic)
LOR mailings - 84
transcript mailings - 34

I didn't include interview fees because I haven't had to fly anywhere or stay overnight in a hotel. Most were day trips. Also, I didn't complete all my secondary applications, because either I realized I would not likely get in, or I didn't actually want to go there, or the application was too hard and I didn't feel like finishing it ("laziness"). Also, I knew from the outset that I only actually was considering about 2 of the osteopathic schools, but I heard at a PCOM presentation that they can kind of tell when a student applies to only 1 or 2 DO schools and thus frown a person using DO as backup. So I could have saved money there, I guess. Finally, the secondary fees ranged from $55 (Temple) to $100 (NYMC, Albany)

Hope this helps. Thank gosh my parents were able to help out with some of this, otherwise I'd be a financial mess. Its been totally worth it, though.

PS - as for how to pay, I paid the Kaplan fee and the MCAT fee (I figured I'd be more likely to study hard and buckle down if I knew how it felt to write a check for that much!) To do this, I just saved some money from work. My parents helped out with the AMCAS, AACOM, and many secondary fees; it sucks having to ask for money, but otherwise I couldn't afford it. Bless their hearts!

This winter, I'm goigng to try and come up with a really good estimeate of how much it cost me. Luckily for the flying to get there interviews I had free flights or vouchers to use...I can pretty much guarantee you the total cost to apply to med school will be attrocius (sp).

I applied to 15 schools, here is my breakdown:

AMCAS: $570
Secondaries: $1250 (14 secondaries)
Suit + accessories: $500
Travel (flights, hotels, ground transportation): $2000 (7 out of state interviews, this amount will really depend on where you live, being from Arizona and having to go to the east coast a few times it was quite expensive)

Grand Total: $4320!

I actually just finished paying it all off. Now I can start buying Christmas presents! Yay!

I applied to 14 schools, 1 being a non-AMCAS

Kaplan: 1350 (huge waste of $)
AMCAS (13): 510
Secondaries: 1220
Airfare: ~800

Total: ~3880 so far.

Good Luck next year.

AMCAS: $300 (6 schools)
Secondaries: $335
LOR: $42
Suit: $400
Interviews: Minimal (stayed with friends, drove to schools, however did cost me missed work and classes)

AMCAS: $420 (10 schools)
Secondaries: $490 (7 Schools)
LOR: ~$100 in gifts (optional)
Suit: $450
Interviews: $1600 for airfair and gasoline, $200 for rental cars/hotel
Kaplan: $0 (what a waste of money!)

Grand total: $3260

Ouch, if I don't get in I will have wasted the price of a decent plasma screen. 🙁

there is financial assistant available for AMCAS and non-AMCAS schools- if you can take advantage of it, then do so as soon as you can. it saved me tons of money

You mean FAP?

I think they work the same as FAFSA. i had to turn in my FAFSA student aid report.

that could be good for me since my parents make very little money and I qualify for aid out the wazoo.

yeah same here. if you qualify, you will only have to pay $85 for the MCAT-- instead of full price. but you have to do it well in advance. it helps a great deal. good luck.

FAP is hard to get. Its even more extreme than what FAFSA gives out. I got grants and scholarships etc...to pay for school...but this FAP BS....

i thought i would qualify for it and i think i still do but AMCAS did a lovely job in confusing me in what i needed to put down on the form i got rejected. when you get confused about things on the form...be wary of what they tell you to do. i called 5 times to make sure too....blah

they messed me over and said they could do nothing about it since they only process your app once. "sorry for the mixup" is all they could tell me.

whatevs....but FAP is granted to very extreme applicants. not many get it but there are people that do because they deserve it.

(arrgghh....im still steamed haha...)

::cough, cough, gag, ehem::

So, you're saying I'll need a job!!!

Damn... that's expensive. Thanks for the heads up guys. Guess I'm not getting any new clothes or the rims I wanted for a while!

:scared:

yeah definitely no rims for a while 😉

but if you do get rims...it should be too much different than spending it on applications.

get rims...can get jacked....

pay secondary fee...can get jacked...

good point... is it disturbing that getting the rims jacked would piss me off more ?? 🙂~

haha see the rims are a big one time payment deal. if they get jacked...you get pissed!!

now applications....i already go into this process knowing that many many MANY schools will reject me....so you kind of get desensitized to the whole rejection thing after a while and its just like...whatevs...

but rims...so shiny!! id be pissed.....mos def.
