I was looking through Western U's (COMP) website and found that the tuition is approx $37000. I'm assuming that doesn't include books and extra costs. So how much extra do you think it'll cost to attend including books and extra fees from the university for the first year?
I can't even imagine paying that much plus living expense! I guess the only options would be through heavy loans and high interest 🙁
Estimated first year budget for class of 2010 is $58,366.00
Stafford and Grad PLUS loans are the way most of us do it. When you're done, assuming you have no other debt, monthly payments should be around $1200 or so (over 30 yrs). Most students get out, buy a house (yes you can buy a house with that much debt, because you're a doctor and banks like that), then after 5 years or so pay off the student loan early through home equity. Your house payment goes up a little, but its a house... it will continue to gain in value unlike your student loan.
Also, some people go through the military HPSP where tuition and stuff is paid, you just have to serve a number of years equal to the number of years you received benefits for.
All kinds of institutional, and private scholarships are also available.
Lastly, if you are interested in primary care fields, the national health service corps offer a similar deal to the military HPSP. You end up serving in designated underserved areas for as many years as you received benefits.
