Hi everyone! 🙂 I'm getting a job this summer to try and pay for equipment/tuition for optometry school and am wondering how much equipment costs in general? Thanks a lot! 👍

Plan for around $3000-3500. That is a very rough ballpark estimate depending on what your school can negotiate prices for, as well as what they actually require you to buy. You can go cheaper or more expensive depending on what brands choose.

That price includes:
BIO
Diagnostic kit
20D and 90D lens, plus other high plus lenses you may want to buy
Gonio lens
Trial lens kit
Prism bars
Foreign body removal kit
Blood pressure cuff and stethoscope
Color and stereo tests (if required)
Entrance skills kit

I would shoot higher than that. I haven't bought any lenses yet (the 20 or 90 or gonios), BIO, vertical prism bar and probably some other things, and have easily spent 3000. Trial lenses are around 500, diagnostic set 800-1000, BP cuff and steth 200, plus probably around 1000 for all the other things that add up (color vision, stereo, cards, horiz prism bar, etc, etc, etc...)

I think I spent around $650 for my diagnostic set (I got the WA one with the pan-optic).

Trial lens set I think was $350.

BIO I have a hard time remembering, maybe $1000ish? I got the older Heine because it's the only one that fit on my little noggin.

The miscellaneous stuff wasn't too bad. It came in a bundle or two from Pioneer. The most expensive of the miscellaneous stuff is probably the Ishihara plates. Though I don't remember how much I spent on the stereo tests.

Lenses also add up. I started out with just a 20D and a 90D (I got a Super 66 later on). We had to get both a 3-mirror and a 4-mirror gonio lens. Those are kinda pricey, but still way better while you're in school.

200 seems like a lot to spend on a blood pressure cuff and steth! I think I paid clser to $35 for mine...

They can get pricey for nice ones. But I just picked up a cheapie kit at another school's bookstore. 😛 I think it was $35-40ish.

I got the keeler diagnostic set around 800ish

the trial lens and other binocular testing equipments were about another 800ish

and we are supposed to purchase BIO and the lenses this summer, since i got the keeler diagnostic, i think i'm going to get the keeler BIO too, even tho Heine looks pretty good too,

I just did the calculation it's about 2400ish cuz I think i'll buy both the 90D and the 78D, I just dont understand why the lenses are sooooo expensive....Volk.....sign....
