I am vaguely aware of there being couple's matching for residencies, but was wondering if anyone knows what a couple would do if one if a doctor and the other a nurse. My husband and I are facing a complicated move in the future because we are both training in the UK but will be moving to the USA when I graduate. He will be looking for a nursing job and I will be looking for a residency. I am assuming I need to look for something and he will go for the same city (in the assumption it will be easier for a nurse than a doctor). We don't have to worry about visas and I don't expect us to be going for the same department since our interests are different now, but I am worried about whether it will be possible to get in the same city.

My wife is a nurse, and we will be moving across the country when I start my internship this June.

The primary issue he will face will be getting a nursing license in the U.S. This is done on the state level, so whichever state you end up in, you will need to determine the requirements of that state's nursing board. I worked as a CNA in two different states, and in both I met multiple nurses from Canada and Australia (though none from the UK), so I am reasonably confident that it will not be too difficult for him to do this.

IMHO, this really won't be much of a problem for you guys. There are a ton of nursing jobs in every city and state in this country. Whereever you end up, as long as he has a license, he will be able to find a job.

Here in Columbus, Ohio, it is relatively easy for nurses to get jobs. Okay... I lie... they practically are begging nurses to apply, if you are qualified... there is a spot you will fit in!

During my husband's first year at OSU, they were offering money to any student who knew a nurse that would interview and hold a position... it was something like $2500 if you could get the nurse to interview (once she/he got the job).

In our local paper, there are about 2 pages of want ads for nurses. I agree with Tired... the main part is getting the nursing license in the U.S.

Good luck!
