I had taken courses in seafood processing like canning, freezing, seafood safety and so on. Can I classify these courses under animal sciences in the VMCAS application? I really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

no clue. choose what you think is the closest. If your schools disagree with your classification, they will switch it.

I know nothing about these courses but my first impression was that they are not animal science.

What department at your school were the classes listed under?

These courses were offered by the dept of fish processing technology. The courses are more related to food science and so I was wondering if I could list them under animal science.

At my school, food science and animal science are two very separate entities. I would probably classify them as 'other', because they seem kind of far removed from animal science. Just my opinion, though. Have you considered contacting the schools that you are interested in and asking them what their thoughts are?

Alternatively, call that VMCAS number and ask them - then you can honestly say you did your best to classify it correctly. The schools aren't going to care one way or the other. 🙂

I found the VMCAS people to be very friendly and helpful the couple times I had a question. And you get right through to a real person, so it's not telephone tag or menu hell.

These courses should be classified as "other" and would not be considered animal sciences.

Thanks!

Thanks friends for all the help. From your responses and after consultation with an animal sciences professor, I am going to classify it as "Other" and not "Animal sciences". I actually wanted to classify it as animal sciences because it is relevant to "Public health and food safety veterinary medicine" and also some universities offer food science and meat science courses under the deperatment of Animal sciences. I want the adcoms to notice my coursework in food safety and food processing. If it is classified as "Other" I am guessing these important courses would not be noticed!

Vetaspirant: You can rest assured that just because courses are classified as "other" they will be reviewed by the colleges of veterinary medicine!
