Course with W or F on your transcript

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I recall correctly there's W and F on the choices when you enter grades so yes I'd assume so

Unfortunately you must report every course + grade received you have ever taken post high school.

Do you know how a W affects the GPA calculation? I'm freaking out because my when I decided to drop the course I thought it would not affect my GPA for dental school. However, I can see that I'm wrong. I took this class for fun, but decided my schedule was too hectic. Would it look better if I retake the course even if it is not a requirement?

Thank you so much. Sorry, I'm just really worried now. =(

"Withdraw/Fail grades ARE included in the overall GPA calculation."

They are included in the GPA calculation in that it will appear on your application.

However, withdraws are worth 0 credits, so regardless of whether or not they are included, 0 credit of 0 credit is well... 0

So all they'll be doing is adding your (cGPA x # of credits taken) + (0 credit from W), then divided by (4(max GPA) x # of credits taken) + (0 credit from W) = (cGPA x # of credits taken) / (4(max GPA) x # of credits taken).

In other words, it doesn't count. Fs to though, because Fs are 4 credits attempted, 0 credits earned. Ws are merely 0 credits earned out of 0 credits attempted.

Thank you for clearing that up

If you are ever in doubt about the rules, just call them. I had some gray area with this last year, they will tell you exactly what to do.

How is withdraws worth 0 credit? When you fill out the coursework manually, it asks for the credits ATTEMPTED for that semester.. (the class was worth something)

on my transcript, I got a W grade for a class but for the credits it shows 3.
like this

Spring 2006 Credit Grade
ENG 240 WRITING II 3.0 W

However I did call AADSAS as well and they said it's not calculated into GPA. But since I'm mirroring exactly what I have on my transcript, will the 3.0 credit be accumulated into "total credit hours attempted," even if it's a W grade?

Each schools vary in how they label their transcripts. However, I am positive that Ws do not count towards your GPA. Again, the reason for this is because to the ADEA, Ws are worth 0 credits in terms of calculating GPA.

In regards to your specific case, I'd imagine they were just showing how that class is supposed to be worth 3 credits, but that doesn't mean 3 credits was attempted.

Edit: I just checked my AADSAS (I have a W too) I just realized that in Credits Attempted, I put 4 as well. On my transcript though, it says 0 attempted. I will have to call tomorrow to clarify what to label it as on the application. But again, important part is in terms of GPA calculation, it is indeed worth 0 credits.

W does nothing. Only thing it will do is look bad if you have dozens of them. Check out my mini transcript with a W in one of the classes. I have my completed app from last year (showing exactly what I entered for AADSAS) and the GPA calculation grid that shows the full breakdown of how AADSAS calculated the GPAs.

If this were my transcript:

Art😛aint the World - ART 360
Non-Science
Not Applicable
Grade: W
ADEA AADSAS grade: None
Credits: 3.00

Microeconomic Principles - ECN 112
Non-Science
Not Applicable
Grade: A
ADEA AADSAS grade: A
Credits: 3.00

If these were my only two classes on my transcript, AADSAS calculates my GPA like this:

Hours: 3
Quality Points: 12
GPA: 4.00

Thanks for clarifying Jeff! 👍👍👍

What did you end up doing?

I'm really confused. Should I put 0 credits attempted for the W's I have?

It says in the link above: "Cumulative quality points are divided by cumulative attempted hours. (Total Quality Points ÷
Total Credit Hours Attempted = GPA)"

So if I put 3 credits attempted for the W's, that means that the 3 credits will go in my attempted hours, whereas a 0 will go in my cumulative quality points, and not how CedarZ4 suggested above (0 cumulative quality points and 0 credits attempted).

So I just called AADSAS and the representative told me that W's go in as 0 quality hours / # of credits attempted (so 3 or 4), which basically ends up being an F...and that all of you guys are misinforming me. 🙁

I mean, I don't know that she can argue with the transcript processing people who have already calculated your GPA's, but it worries me. I'm calling back.

Update: Ooooookay, whoever this guy who picked up when I called back is, he's amazeballs because he really went out of his way to answer my question (unlike the woman I had earlier this morning who was the worst rep to talk to IMO). When he told me that W's would count as F's, I told him that I had a "friend" whose W didn't factor into the calculation at all. 😉 He went away from the phone for a long time before coming back and telling me that W's don't count, but WF's do count as F's. I hope that's true, because I don't have a WF on my transcript...thankfully. 😀 Now I just hope the transcript department doesn't think differently! :luck::luck::luck:

Thanks all and I'll keep y'all updated on my situation!
