  1. Pre-Pharmacy

Hi,

I would like to know what are the pre-req courses for pharmacy school. My major is biology. The courses that are required for my major: Introduction to Biology, General and Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Cell Biology, Evolutionary Biology, General Ecology, Physics, Developmental Biology, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology, and Genetics. But there are also biology elective courses that I have to take, along with pre-req courses for my major. The biology elective course I already took was immunology. Since I have stated in my previous thread that my principle of fields study (my major) GPA is 2.840, because I have few C's in some of my classes, which are Organic Chemistry 3 (I have a B in Orgo 1 and an A in Orgo 2), Cell biology, Evolutionary Biology, Introduction to biology 1 (I got a B in both intro to bio 2 and 3) and Genetics. Is the cell biology one of the pre-req for pharmacy schools or what? I'm asking this question because I have asked one of my friends who is currently a pre-pharmacy major, mentioned that he didn't take cell biology, just general biology. Do you think I should retake these courses that I've gotten a C in to show the pharmacy school that I did much better at the second time? I am definitely planning to re-take Genetics, but unsure abou Cell biology and few others. Or, I should try much better in upper-level science courses and few pre-req courses left? It's just that I am concern about how the pharmacy school will think of me if they see my GPA. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Individual schools require different pre-reqs. I advise you to check out the websites of the schools you wish to apply.

If you're getting your B.S. in Biology, there are some pre-reqs that can be "omitted" and can be found under the general ed requirements. If you're transferring, you have to complete ALL pre-reqs as described on the website.

For example lets look at UNC:
http://www.pharmacy.unc.edu/admissi...icants-who-entered-college-fall-2006-or-after

In my opinion you should retake the Organic 3 (I've only heard of 1 and 2, so I didn't even know of a third offered at universities.)....Going back and retaking intro to Biology when you've done well the next two is kind of silly.

Get an A in the Organic you retake to try and buffer your GPA. Try to pull that GPA up over 3.0. Good luck!

As stated above, different schools can vary greatly with regard to pre-reqs. You should definitely check with each school you may apply to and make sure you satisfy their requirements. In general, the following is a general rough guide to common pre-reqs:

general chem (1 year)
organic chem (1 year)
general bio (1 year)
microbiology
anatomy
physiology
calculus (at least 1 semester)
physics
statistics
English (1 year)

You would probably benefit from retaking some classes to raise C's to A's or B's. A GPA below 3.0 will have your application automatically rejected without review at some (but not all) schools.

Good luck!
