Is there any CPT coding for
1. Going into the OR and getting the orientation of the specimen from the surgeon?
2. Sometimes surgeon takes a piece of fresh tumor for his research study, so they call the pathology resident to come into OR and observe?

Pathology residents can't bill for anything so if it is a resident that goes in, then the answer is no, but if a pathologist is called to the O.R. for orientation or gross examination, the code is 88329. The interaction must be documented in the final report. The reimbursement is close to zilch.

how about billing the surgeon for misoriented lumpectomies, picking out staples in thyroidectomies, disimpacting colectomies, and forcing us to differentially ink 1 cm lipomas?
i wish we pathologists were treated better!
