OK...lets say a school has 100 spots, and sends out 120 early acceptance letters...say that all 100 of those spots get filled like right away...what happens to those other 20 people? are they just bounced? B/c i've noticed that schools will send out more acceptances than slots b/c normally they get turned down by some of the applicants...but what if that didn't happen?

You don't know the procedure? It is clearly stated in the guide of common sense dental applications. Once an acceptance letter is received, the individual must call and inform the school "no take-backs". Once this reply is registered, it is official. The first 100 individuals are good to go, the other 20 were to slow, and therefore not worthy.🙂 That is why ddsmack was programming all the numbers into his speed dial...very important to be quick.

From the years of admitting dental students, they have a pretty good idea how many will attend relative to the number of acceptances sent out. It's not likely to happen that if you sit on it too long, the entire class will be full. If by some slim chance this does happen, you can attend your second choice that caused you to debate for so long.

ask NYU what to do in that situation. They had to pay people not to come until the next year!

Not kidding.

I also heard Case's 2005 entering class was bigger than they had seats for because of that exact situation. I could be wrong but that's what a current Case student told me.

That is true. Cases class size for 2005 is bigger than normal because a lot of people accepted the invites to attend. Case was good about accomadating all of them though. I stayed with a D2 while I was there on the interview.

This is exactly right. Admissions has it down to a T as to the number of acceptances/number of enrolled ratio. At my institution, there are a fixed amount of acceptances sent out Dec 1st with a good idea of how many will accept, still leaving room for those not interviewed yet, should they have strong interviewees after the Dec 1st.

I heard one year NYU had more students than they expected. They made a deal that they would automatically accept any of those applicants if they would wait a year, but nobody was willing to wait. Then after the first year, NYU "failed" several students to get their class size to where they wanted it. Has anyone else heard of this?

this happened at pitt a couple of years ago. now they're very, very careful to accept only the right amount of people that htey have seats for before going to the waitlist.

i think if they accept too many people, then they just need to suck it up and make space.

It seems kind of stupid to admit more people than there are seats. Wouldn't it make sense to offer admission for the 100 seats and just keep everyone else on the waitlist? Then when they get kids who don't plan on attending, they pick off the waitlist.

Or suck it up and make space for the over admitted students like Beannaithe said

That is why they will only send out lets say 50 letters come Dec. 1st, and after that do a rolling admission, where after they get answers from those 50 they can start sending them out as they go, down on their list.

My favorite school said they will only mail out about 30 letters come Dec. 1st. 🙁 That is why it might be even March before u get acceptance/rejection letter from some schools. CRAZY!

Not all schools do this. I was told UoP gives out enough acceptances Dec 1st to fill their class.
