You could also run a blood drive for sickle cell patients with leukemia, teach inner city kids about the trajectory of curvature after schooling their a*ses with a triple-double in a one-on-one half-court game, become a sign-language translator for abandoned deaf children trying to reconnect with their long lost parents, or start a city-wide initiative to provide lodgings and rehabilitation for pregnant crack addict women living below the poverty line.

These are just like easy things to think of off the top for me. So I mean if you can maybe twist around one of those or try to get on my level and think of your own, you may be able to do something cool that can save the world. It starts with you offering a helping hand to your fellow human beings.

See I knew this would happen. Dude you need to lay off the spinach dip; you can only have so much.

True, except all of these are equally susceptible to the same "every non-paid work effort is economic destruction" assumptions. A lot of high school students do paid tutoring and people can get paid to do sign-language translation. I grew up in one of these inner-city communities that pre-meds are always encouraged to do their local volunteer tourism in and have never understood why people think those efforts are universally less disruptive than ones that take place internationally.

Honestly, people should just do what they're interested in doing. If you have poor motives, you're going to do poor work. If you have a passion for working around a certain issue, you're going to find a way to do it in a sustainable and effective manner. Prostrating yourself before strangers on a message board in order to find out if an experience is alright for you to do seems like a horrible way to develop yourself as a person.

I move that this sentence be it's own separate thread and stickied as an announcement.
