I've had two interviews so far: Creighton (via the IDEP program for Idaho residents), and UDM. I may not have the luxury of a choice come December, but in the event that I do have to choose, I'm looking for some specific pros and cons for each school.

There's the obvious cost advantage of going through the IDEP program to Creighton, but cost aside (I'm hoping to get the Air Force scholarship), which will be a better experience and which will make me a better dentist?

Thanks in advance!

i have a friend who went to UDM, and from what i was told....

UDM

pros: great clinical experience
solid facilities
there's a lot to do if you're willing to drive around

cons: you're in a bad area of detroit
the bigger class size may be a problem

Most of the dentists I have shadowed in CO went to Creighton. They have spoken very highly of the program's clinical training (which also sounds like is UDM's strength). Creighton sounds a little outdated as far as techniques and equipment go, but the dentists I know that went there have terrific chair side manner and they partially attribute that to the wide variety of exposure they gained in school and the amount of time spent with patients (which they said was partially gained from having no specialty programs there).

Also, since you said you are applying AF, it sounded to me like a lot of the dentists that teach at Creighton are retired AF. That may be an advantage in that you can learn the ropes of the military from them to a certain extent.

This is all second hand info, but just thought I would add in what I have heard since Creighton doesn't get talked about too much on these boards.

regarding creighton, i've heard you get a lot of exposure as well, bc they don't have specialty clinics on site, so you'll learn the ins and outs of GD to the fullest.

I know this will be a tough choice for you, but when weighing the pros and cons, you'd be remiss to forget about the ping pong rooms at UDM.

Thanks guys. I definitely think I'm going to base my decision on the ping pong tables alone 🙂

Both are quality schools. I would pick based on cost of attendance because I haven't heard an overwhelming amount of negatives about either school. Creighton has no specialty clinics. It's one of the more underrated dental schools in this country to be honest. I doubt there's a shortage of patients there. UDM also has a great patient pool. Both schools will train you to become a fairly good clinician.
