To all the incoming Creighton students....I have a silly question. What type of laptop bag are you choosing? Are you distance or campus based?

To all current students, what bag did you choose and how'd it work out for you?

Now that the application process is all over for us...we can focus our attention on the more critical issues!

I'm a distance student, and I chose the backpack. I read some posts from awhile back saying the rolling bag was heavy and cumbersome.

Not to thread hijack 🙂, but has anyone done course waivers yet? I'm having trouble finding the link to the form on their site, and admissions hasn't been very helpful so far.

Also, did anyone attend the online chat from last week? I couldn't make it, and I was wondering if I missed anything.

Looking forward to meeting all of you soon!

There was this laptop backpack I found online that I really liked, so I bought that. On the day that that the backpack came to my house via mail, I got that e-mail regarding the free bag. Oh well, I don't like any of the other bags as much as the one I have now.😀

So, I'll probably get one of the other bags just in case I need to do some heavy transferring of books and stuff.😉

I was late and had technical difficulties with my headset, so I could only watch the text chat. I don't remember any pertinent information that would be released in an e-mail, so you probably are fine. I'm more looking forward to this week's chat about academic preparation.

Hi all,

I chose the bottom one - the ladies handbag.

I did the course waivers for three courses. Here is the link: http://spahp.creighton.edu/spahp/student_affairs/forms/Waiver_rev_9_2003.asp Definately don't wait until the July 13th deadline, as it takes some time to gather all of the information required.

Looking forward to orientation!! Where is everyone staying? I'm thinking the Hilton or another hotel close by.

i chose the last bag, as well. i'm excited/nervous about school starting!!! yay!

Dig0...you're not hi-jacking this thread...i purposely made the title non-specific so any questions/comments related to Creighton students could be discussed!! thanks!

drugdoc...if i'm not mistaken, i believe the on-campus dorms will be available to us. the only thing i'm not sure about is if they'll open them up say the day prior (i'm arriving sunday and would need lodging sunday night) or if they're only providing housing monday through friday. the last time i spoke to someone at creighton they said an email regarding housing should be sent in the next couple of weeks. if not, i stayed at the hilton garden..nice and quiet..

one more thing...has anyone waived their health insurance? i read about our option to waive and i went to the website but their form for 2007-08 wasn't available. any comments?

I couldn't waive my health insurance either. The Chickering group website or whatever said the deadline was back in February. Umm...many of us were accepted after that.😕 I guess they figured that Creighton undergrads would have known about the waiver earlier. I should ask because I'm on my dad's health insurance plan he gets from work so there's no point in running up my loan bill for a year.🙂

i agree...anywhere we can save money is worth the try. i think the deadline back in february was for the 2006-2007 school year....so i'm hoping that we have a similar deadline next february to waive for this year (it doesn't make sense to me but this is all new to me too) i'm just hoping we'll get all our answers at orientation!

I was told by the office that the insurance waiver form will be made available in July.

Thanks drugdoc for the link.

Since dorm room spaces are limited, I opted for a hotel room. I was fortunate to get a room at a Holiday Inn in central Omaha for really cheap through priceline. Feel free to PM me if you would like to go that route.

From the recent email we got, it sounds like we're getting really nice laptops 🙂

Ack, I forgot the time zone works different while I am staying in AZ. 😱 Was there anything important that was talked during today's chat that I missed?

For pharmacy, the main points were:

The admissions people said that people should spend 3-4 hours per credit hour a week studying- Yeah...if you have no life.

The most one should work is between 15-20 hours

It can be a good idea to look over organic notes for biochemistry this fall

Learning the Top 200 is overkill because we don't have the context yet, but its okay to familiarize ourselves with the drugs

A textbook list will be available in July

It's best to study with breaks

The course schedule is on this webpage: LINK

Here's a website with our schedule for the next four years: http://spahp.creighton.edu/spahp/student_affairs/calendar/CPHAstop_start.asp#Campus%20Pharmacy%20Class%20of%202011

I'm stuck with the default bag for distance students. I was never able to actually connect with OLAT to make my selection. 🙁

I'im starting to get excited (and a little nervous too) - for interviews I stayed at the Quality Inn in Council Bluffs (it was about 5 minutes away from campus), but I think I'm looking for something a little nicer for orientation week.

I think I saw somewhere on the website that you could check in to the dorms on Sunday and check out the following Saturday morning, but it was information from last year. I'm sure you'll be able to though since we have to be there early Monday morning.

Can't wait to meet you all in a few weeks!

sounds like most people (on SDN anyway) are choosing to stay off-campus...does anyone know how much they're charging for use of their dorms? i'm wondering what would be cheaper and more convenient....

Apartments are a LOT cheaper than the dorms and I probably will get an apartment for P2 and beyond. I chose to stay in Heider Hall, the apartment-style dorm, simply because this is the first time I'm truly living the "college life" where I'm finally living on my own away from my parents. I just wanted to ease myself into pharmacy school by lessening all the external factors that may be distracting.

Anyway, a studio apartment in Heider Hall is going to cost me $660 a month. Even though that includes some furniture with all utilities and high speed Internet paid, that's still expensive. The next best option is to get a couple of fellow students and get a 2-4 bedroom suite in Davis Square, which costs a little under $600.

So yeah, Creighton dorms are expensive and the cheaper route would be an apartment even if you want to live by yourself. I do have to admit that the dorms are convenient with the bus going by the building every so often, but the frugal student would be better off getting a roommate and/or living in a $400 to $500 a month apartment.

omnione...thanks for the input...but i should have clarified that i meant off-campus accomodations for orientation...sometimes i forget about the two pathways....i'm distance so i'm looking for options for orientation week...but thank you for the response...i'm sure other campus students will find your info helpful!

I was wondering about your question too as I knew that you were distance. I didn't think much of it as I met a couple of students during my interview who live in the Omaha region but needed to be in the distance pathway due to family/children issues. So, I figured it wasn't that far-fetched that a distance student wanted a dorm.😀

I really have no idea what the rental rates, if any, the dorms have. Downtown hotels in Omaha aren't cheap but I think they're manageable if you look. I would let you borrow my studio for orientation week, but I don't think I get to move in until the first days of August.🙂

🙂you're reasoning is valid! yeah, i'll just search around. i stayed at the hilton garden for interviews but $200/night is not affordable in my book! creighton said they'll send out info regarding lodging soon....i'm hoping it's real soon as i'd like to make my arrangements for hotels if necessary! thanks for even thinking about lending your studio...i'm sure i'll find something that works out for me!

Don't forget Council Bluffs too as there are hotels around the casinos and the downtown area which provide a short travel time to Creighton.

If you go to the Current Student page from the Pharmacy homepage, there is a link to Schedules on the left side. There isn't anything up for us newbies yet, but they have housing information for 2008/09/10 classes. It looks like a 6 night stay in a double at Swanson Hall is about $110 per person (total) if I'm interpreting the information correctly. That is a lot cheaper than any hotel I found so far!

The off-campus hotels I've looked at have ranged from $51 to $124 a night (I haven't bothered looking at any hotel over the low $100's for a night - I can't spend $1200 for a week!). Omnione is right - Council Bluffs is convenient and slightly cheaper, but there are fewer choices. When I stayed there before, my room was $54 per night and I was about 5 minutes away from campus.

Maybe someone will have some advice/insight at the chat tonight...

yeah creighton dorms are insanely expensive, costs 8800 a year for undergrads. be prepared to walk everyday from heider to wherever your class is because heider gets skipped a lot on the shuttle. jk but it's true sometimes.

Was there any important information shared during last night's chat? I was not able to be there.

does anybody know the date for the campus-based class' white coat/professionalism ceremony?

MORx,

I thought there was some interesting information shared regarding intern hours and pre-req courses. I emailed Anne to ask if she could distribute the transcript the way Shawn did last week but I haven't heard back yet.

okay, so after reading through the transcripts from the last chat, i decided to go ahead and make reservations off campus for orientation week. i didn't want to go through the trouble of packing sheets, towels and all that fun dorm stuff since i'll probably already have a couple of bags of "essentials"! anyone else opting for a stay off campus? is everyone getting excited? i am...sort of that "first day of school" type of nervous stomach kind of feeling...but you know, in the good kind of way! 😳

For those that filled out course waivers, have you heard back, and if so, how long did it take?

Definitely looking forward to orientation - it'll be a nice breather on my road trip from NC 🙂

I heard back. It took about 2 weeks. I submitted for three classes and passed out of one - Anatomy. Apparently, it's difficult to do so, as no one passed out of any last year! So, I'm very thankful!! I know there is one other person who passed out of Anatomy, as well, according to one of the transcripts.

I had two previous classes for each of my three classes (2 for Anatomy, 2 for Physiology, and 2 for Microbiology).
