I believe that Creighton University has some strong affiliation with the Christian Catholic religion. How deeply rooted are these sentiments in that school?

My religious upbringing reflected my mother’s catholic roots. We regularly attended church until late high school, at which point I began to develop separate views regarding religion and spirituality. Since then, my spiritual path has seen me teeter on the edge of atheism, agnosticism, deism and other beliefs occupying a wide range of the religious spectrum.

Should I mention that I was Catholic, or nothing at all, or just mention that I was brought up Catholic and then NOT mention that I don't really practice anymore?

Also, does anyone have any good or bad things to say about the school? I'm doing the secondary right now and any additional info would be a great help. Thanks!

I'm not sure mentioning your religious views/affiliations is really the right way to go. Certainly the application does not ask for any disclosure of that information, and neither Creighton nor any of the other medical schools rooted in the Jesuit tradition indicate a preference for those who ascribe to the Catholic faith, as far as I know. Loma Linda, on the other hand, does specify their desire to admit SDA students, although they do admit non-SDA's as well.

So, to answer your question, I would go to their med. school website, as well as the undergraduate one, to get a better feel for the school. The tradition of the Jesuit Order heavily emphasizes concepts of social justice, service, and compassion. I think you may want to talk about these things and your perspective on them, perhaps including any relevant experiences you've had. Also take a look at the medical school's mission statement to see if their goals in educating you are in line with your own goals as an aspiring physician.

Hope that helps

Thanks for your comments.

The secondary does ask for this: "Describe briefly any experiences and/or skills that have made you more sensitive or appreciative of other cultures or the human condition."

I think that religious background is definitely imperative to mention, as it shows how you may or may not be able to relate to a relatively large amount of people who you will be treating in this country.
