Just got that too. That is quite a lot for one as well. I have had them before, but they were a lot cheaper.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a little on the meh side? I hope this isn't the beginning of a long string of student fleecing.

Ummm. I think at the end of July. Have to work up to the end. Has anyone decided what they are going to do for Health Ins? (those who aren't still covered under their parents).

i know i have the info somewhere, but all my paperwork is boxed up right now. what is the class schedule like during the week? How many hours of classroom work is there per day? i sound kind of like an idiot; i am going to this school and have no clue what it is all about. meh. Thanks for the help guys!

Is anybody familiar with The Rorick. It is an old apartment complex between Creighton and Old Market that is slowly being converted into condos...very cheap condos. I do not know Omaha well but from a distance here is what I see.

Pros:
-cheap
-location
-possible good investment

cons:
-new development (i.e. unknown commodity)
-seedy part of town (although I think it is going through a rebirth, of sorts)
-risk of buying vs. renting

Any thoughts of insights??

1. You cannot get a mortgage unless you have a job. Or, maybe your parents will cosign.
2. Real estate is all about Location, Location, Location. If that is a seedy part of down it may be hard to get rid of after 4 years of school.
3. I would consult a Realtor.

Don't live in the Rorick, it's pretty sketchy in that neighborhood, and there are plenty of much nicer places for similar prices

1. is attendance taken at lecture?
2. if not, do most ppl study at home or attend anyway?
3. how much PBL is there? (I hate PBL, so think about how to spin this one if it's a lot 🙂 )
4. do you do anything on the ugrad campus? use the gym? use the library? pick up cute girls? 😉
5. when do clinical experiences begin? how often?
6. any competition w/ the other med school there...U Neb i think?
7. how much "free time" do you have
8. how large is the class?
9. is there on campus housing available since it is at the ugrad school?
10. do most kids live off campus if housing is available?
11. does living off campus cause the class to not be as close-knit?...or maybe you become less secluded? hard to imagine however being at an undergrad campus
12. how annoying is the weather?

thanks....i like creighton, i like the campus (although a little small imo compared to UConn), but it will be hard to pull me away from the proximity of nymc since i have nothing that separates the two....as for knowing where i will be happy, that's hard. i will look at the reviews, but i have talked to a bunch of ppl at nymc who are very happy w/ their decision, one who said that having a support network nearby was important.

M4 at creighton here, so as for the ?'s
1. No attendance, you're big kids now lecture from 8-12 lab/small/etc.. afternoons
2. 100% attend lecture week 1, drops to about 65% by mid year and thats where it stays
3. PBL-average
4. Most people use the gym, library, etc... and don't hit on undergrads
5. Clinical experience starts year 1, longitudinal clinics weekly year 2, years 3/4 all clinical
6. I throw dirty needles at UNMC students. Competition is what you make, some people care, some don't
7. Free time...uh, yeah
8. 120/class +/-5
9. There is on campus housing for professional students/families/etc...
10. Most people live off campus, housing in omaha is cheap
11. the knit is strong, in fact by year 3 you could do with a little unknitting, trust me, you'll spend plenty of time with these people, regardless of housing
12. Weather is fine, you don't get to go outside when you're in medical school so it doesn't matter.

Wiry:

After looking at the Schedules for M1, I have no idea how people could go to class and still have time to study? Solid class from 8-11/12 then labs, etc in the afternoon. With the classes available on podcast, why do people still go to class? Is there a benefit of going to class that is missed on the podcast?

You study in the evenings, it puts a bit of a dent in your free time, but don't worry it gets worse second year. As for attending lectures, I personally did not, the podcasts were fine for me and it allowed me to skip the lecutres that i didn't feel were high yield. I would recommend going to lectures for the first 1-2 weeks and see if it works for you.

Can any current Creighton Med Students give some insight on the best way to study the material at CU? Are text books necessary? Any insight is appreciated.

just writing because i can. everybody get their buddy? I am not going to email mine quite yet. Don't want to seem too anxious. Any other fun summer news from anyone? How about that schedule for the first week? I think I had my first nightmare last night. Don't really remember it fully though. Whelp, basically I just wanted to bump this up. My work here is done.

We got our buddy assignments? Yeah...the first week schedule kind of freaked me out too. Oh well...many have come before us and many will come after.

We sure are going to have some long days! Must of my semesters in undergrad were like 8:00-1:00 and a few afternon labs but that was about it. I hope we don't die!

Does everyone have their housing lined up? I still need to get out there and check out a few places.

I have an odd request, but here goes. I'm in charge of getting people to respond to the 31 question's thread in the mentor forum and am looking for current students at all of the med schools of the US. So, I realize this is the class thread for the incoming class, but perhaps someone from previous classes has been helpful in answering your questions and giving you advice in this thread. I have no time to read through every single class thread to get this info, but if you could post some user names of some such people (or pm them to me, including what school you are from), I can pm them with my request. Thanks!

it does look like we are going to have long days. question though, are the lectures mandatory? i can't remember. with the lecture notes, note service, and audio online, i feel like going to class (unless it is your day to take notes) isn't always necessary. anyone else of the same opinion????? i know i have a hard time getting anything out of class, so right now i am kind of tempted to not go from time to time. man, we haven't even started and i am already talking about not going to class.

as for living situation, i already have mine lined up, which takes a lot of the stress away. i asked a family friend who is a second year when i should get down there to move in (living in the medical fraternity), and she said sunday or monday would be fine with orientation starting wednesday. thats about all i have to say. pretty bored right now.

From what I understand the lectures are not mandatory, it seems like there is going to be enough info online to get away with not going. But for me going to class always helped so I am not sure what I am going to do. I am getting really excited for everything to start. I have not hit the bored stage of summer yet I am just working. Don't really know why because the 6 grand that I am going to make over the summer doesn't make a dent in the 40+ I need to take out in loans every year.

Going to class is really helpful for some people, not for others. I stopped going to class in the middle of first year, and I never looked back. I worked much more efficiently at my own pace, using the text, and with the noteservices, I was able to tell what the lecturer emphasized. This method worked very well for me, and I had a lot more free time. However, it does not necessarily work for everyone. My main advice to you is to take all advice with a grain of salt. Med school is a ridiculously huge volume of material. The important thing is that you master the material, how you do it doesn't matter.

Personally, I increased my exam scores, free time, AND most importantly, my sanity when I stopped attending lecture. But some of my friends did worse if they didn't sit in on lectures. If you find that you're not doing well on the exams, switch up your methods! If you're in a good groove, stick with what you've got, even if people tell you you're crazy for not doing it their way. There's always a lot of peer pressure from classmates, because we're all Type A people who are convinced that our way is the best way. No. The best way is the way that works best for YOU. If you're learning the material, you're doing it right. Period.

I know that may not be exactly what you want to hear, but it's true. I wish there were a magic formula that worked well for everyone, but there isn't. For some people, attending lecture works. It doesn't for others. Your M2 buddy may LOVE a certain book and insist that you buy it... and you'll find it confusing and superfluous. A lot of your first year may be trial and error, but you'll figure out what works best. Everyone does. Good luck!

thanks for the great advice roo. makes me feel a little more relaxed. so....book list. my friend told me not to buy any yet and to run the list past her so she can tell me what i need to buy. the house has a library with almost all the books. so do i have this straight, we are only doing MCB I and anatomy (well, along with the other 2 smaller ones - not saying they aren't important) in the fall? is that all fall as in until xmas break? or is that all fall as in until november? and now i am freaking out.

Great questions Spospo. Which books do we buy? Long list that says a lot of required, but I too have heard not to buy a lot of books. Can anyone clarify?

just got the orientation schedule........i am officially nervous. ugh. also, my stupid undergrad is having trouble with my transcript, which is supposed to be there by the 15th. anyone email their M2 buddy? optional events anyone? i think i would feel like a huge dork going to them just because i always felt like a huge dork going to them in undergrad. i don't like all this nervousness i now have. ick

Has anyone received confirmation on whether we should buy books, etc? Anyone?

I am in, took me some time to figure out where I should go, but I have decided to become a Creightonite. For some reason I just had this feeling that it was the right place to be. I am getting pretty excited and starting to look for places to live. During the interview I stayed with a student that lived right across the street from the campus, does anyone know the name of that apartment complex (sorry that is a vauge question, I think that it was on the north side if my memory serves me). Thanks.

THe place you are referring to is Kellom Knolls or Kellom Heights............I lived there for 4 years. It's not for everyone though, it's somewhat shady at night but the rent is dirt cheap (290 a month for two bedroom w/roomate). If you are a guy and as long as you don't drive like a porsche (or really nice car), it's alright cause you can walk to school or the hospital. If you are a girl, it might be a bit to shady. Congrats to all you guys going to Creighton, I had a great 4 years there.🙂

Well I am not a girl, but I am married to one and I heard from someone else that can be a litte rough over there, so we ended up living in bellevue, a little bit of a drive but the wife found the place that she wanted to live down there so what was I supposed to do? How id the traffic in the mornings there on the freeway. I lived in Denver for a while and it is a nightmare I sure hope it is better then Denver!

20-30 tops. Just hop on Hwy 75 and it shouldn't be too much of a hastle....I think it goes right by Creighton.

i don't know if people on the waitlist ever check this, but there is still some waitlist movement going on. a friend of mine got a call last tuesday. i also got a call last week because i was holding 2 acceptances. they were trying to clean the list up and get all of those out that had just been slow to withdraw.

Hello, and congratulations to all who had received an acceptance to Creighton U. My name Is Jose and I will be leaving for medical school in Nevada. I have a condo for rent near school, parking is included in the rent. It is within walking distance of the school and the old market. Great for those who wish to be close to it all. PM me and I will give you the specifics.

Sorry to jump in, but haven't had any success on the pre-allo threads.

Just wondering if anyone knows what is the status of Creighton's Student Host Program? I can't seem to find any information about signing up for it prior to my interview in September.

I have tried the Admission's Office, but they just shot me an email saying they were putting it together still.

Was hoping for some insider info.

Thanks!

I think they are going to be ironing that out next week, at least that is what Nipper said (they will be recruiting hosts).
