Creighton University SOM - Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thx for the answers.

got my fin aid package today.......

63K in pure loans 😡 Of course I wasn't expecting more, but tuition went up to 41.9K. I won't need their health insurance, and i'll probably buy a laptop now and not w/ loan money....so closer to 60K 😀 this kinda sucks

Doesn't NYMC cost relatively the same? Plus, Omaha housing is dirt cheap...Gotta factor in cost of living. My package was the same. Pure loans. They only give out scholarships to 15%, and I've heard they give most scholarship money to M3s and M4s (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I would think the deciding factor for you should be location location location, since the schools you are accepted to are fairly similar in cost. I did a comparision of the two schools on USNews and the cost of housing at NYMC is budgeted higher, and the average indebtedness of graduates is about 20K more than Creighton (the accuracy of avg. debt is understandably debateable).

yea, last year's tuition was almost exactly the same, so i'm assuming nymc's increase will be at least the same. I also felt that the housing amount they say is highly overestimated since NYMC was saying around 11K last year for the first years, and Omaha housing is probably around half the cost for rent. I was hoping for some very lucky scholarship w/ my below average mcat

also, does anyone know what comp. reqs are? I'm sort of looking at macs right now, but also in case I get a PC and then they require something specific. I doubt this would happen, but I know UVM requires Dell and some other schools are like that, so I want to be sure.

Did you score any perkins loans? I got all loans too but no Perkins alas.

no Perkins....max subsidized stafford, max unsub, the rest PLUS

so we have til May 1st to accept? I'm assuming we can say we don't want it all and such, is that a good idea to not take it all? (i.e., since i will be on my parents health insurance, should i remove that amount from PLUS loans?). I'm just going to wait a bit and make a decision on school b4 accepting. If we do accept, and let's say I get into UConn off the WL if they put me there, can I say I'm going to UConn and not be penalized for accepting the loan package?

2007 Match List

Does someone know about these hospitals. The diff. w/ NYMC's match list is that I know many of the hospitals, but these I don't. There are some good ones in there...like Mayo, obvi....but most of these I have no idea. If I go there, I would most likely return to the east coast unless my life changes (ie, meeting someone 😉 )

No, you won't be penalized for accepting the loan and then not enrolling. You could also take the maximum and repay what you don't use at the end of the year...just so you have cushion in case something comes up. Not sure about the computer requirements, either....was wondering the same thing. Creighton supposedly matches 93-98% of people in their top choices, and I think NYMC's websight said they match 75%. But, there are so may things to consider in matching that I wouldn't take much stock in Match lists. Some people want to go to different places, and who knows what you will value at the end of 4 years that will influence your decision. There were a couple at Dartmouth and other New England facilities (saw one at NYU) so nothing is impossible.

yea, i did notice that nymc said 75 percent get one of their top 3 choices, but i'm not too sure if that could just mean that they let their students shoot for whatever they want while kids at creighton may have gone with safer choices in their top 3, but either way that will all boil down to my own personal preference and performance...i can do really bad in school and aim high and not match, or i can do really well and go for something safe, or the scenario i like best, doing great and aiming high! A bunch of the matches did look really good, so i know nothing will hold me back at creighton.

i'm starting to make a list of pros and cons, so i hope current students will respond with what they like best and least about creighton. i'm going to look through some of the interview feedback as someone had already suggested to me, but w/ a grain of salt knowing that those are interviewees and not students.

sartre, is creighton your final decision? i'm also going to look at schools i'm WLed at as well as i start comparing.

I think I will end up at Creighton, but I also have a lot of considerations that you do not. Omaha offers more for my spouse in terms of employment (she is very specialized and the other school's region has no real industry for her specialty). She has some good job prospects already, so Omaha is really promising. Plus, Omaha is only 3 hrs away from both of our families. The only really negative thing I have EVER heard about Creighton is the cost, and believe me I am worried about it too. Since I have a working spouse, I will also have other income and can use the loan money very conservatively. From an outside perspective, I think it comes down to location and the importance of being near family. You're from the East Coast, so it is up to you to decide. Either way, I think its an apple vs. apple when cosidering tuition (not the same for cost of living though). So, consider how much of a support system you need. Do you like the east coast atmosphere? Are you willing to risk a change of pace? Cost is a consideration as well. Rank your priorities. There really is not right or wrong answer here...its the energy you put into your final decision that matters.

who's going to 2nd look? as of now not me due to money, but i would like to go....hmmmm

I went to the NEST website....how do I accept the aid package?

What percentage of students matched in their top 3....the 96-98 percent of students matching is for anything, not just top 3, so there are students without matches. I don't know if NYMC had any unmatched students, so I just asked over there as well.

so CP, have you decided that you are going to creighton? just wondering. i am headed there as of right now, but should be hearing from UWash this week. Most likely a rejection but whatever. i loved creighton. i won't be going to the 2nd look weekend, but i will probably go down during the summer sometime to find a place to live.

I haven't decided yet. Both schools are fairly equal w/ NYMC also offering the opportunity to do rotations in NYC if I decide that's important to me. Aside from that, there's really nothing about either school that I don't like...NYMC is just more convenient being so close to home so holds a slight edge because of that.

I'm not really focusing too much on it though since I have yet to hear back from UConn and Tufts, and am WLed at UVM and VCU.....of which VCU moves extremely quickly. But I should at least decide very soon amongst the two schools I have since I shouldn't bank on anything else...I have been reading into each school, and it's not as if I look at one school's curriculum and think that it won't work for me for some reason. The reviews for NYMC are pretty negative in interview feedback, but my interview experience was good. I didn't like that I had to find my interviewer w/o any real help, and then had to miss part of the tour b/c I had 2 interviewers instead of 1 for some reason, but I didn't look at that negatively, esp. against the school. I do wonder if Creighton is maybe a little TOO laid-back? I'd like to be relaxed and social, but at the same time I don't want to hurt my education b/c of it....however, again, I can study or party as much as I want at any school I go to, that's all personal preference. So I can work hard at Creighton while remaining cooperative w/ a more relaxed grading system.

Good luck w/ UWash!

Hey C.P. Jones-- in the interview packet it says that the 96-98% is the percentage of students matching in their specialty of choice. Thought I would bring it up just in case you missed it, but I think that is pretty awesome. 🙂 I don't think I'm going out for the 2nd look, but I will be out this summer to look for an apartment. Good luck with your decision! It will all become clear as May approaches.

i'm beginning to lean more and more towards NYMC due to proximity/location....NYC is a bit tough to beat no matter how nice Omaha is, but w/o any glaring problems from NYMC yet and Creighton being quite on par, I can't make a switch yet, although I will continue to think about this. And although Valhalla is very suburban, so is the town I live in now and I'm happy, and if I'm bored I drive to a store, or go out w/ friends, movies, go to New Haven (closest small city), etc. Maybe if Omaha weren't in the middle of the country. but not saying no! esp. b/c you guys will be awesome classmates to have!

so has anyone figured out how to accept the aid package?😕

Hey guys. I won't be joining you all in August. I've officially withdrawn my application from the school. It was VERY difficult but I think I've made the right decision. Creighton is a GREAT school 👍

Hopefully, one of the waitlisted SDNers will be able to snap up my spot. Good Luck to You All (wherever you all decide to go) :luck: .

Stay in touch CP....

Which school did you decide on?

Which school did you decide on?

Officially, I am waiting on the financial aid packages from some of the schools. But for all intents and purposes, it will be University of Maryland. Are you definitely going to Creighton? Although I had many other reasons for deciding on Maryland, the $60k+ per year in loans for attending Creighton helped me make my decision. Hopefully, you all will get a bunch of scholarships 👍

No scholarships, but the ability for my wife to get a job in her very specialized field was the kicker. There is absolutely no industry for Audiology in South Dakota which is the cheaper State School I was accepted to. Hopefully, we can live off her income and not use much of what I borrow...we can then pay back what we don't use.

that's so awesome to have an alternate income source while in school....must...get...married.... 🙁 😳

Good luck at UMaryland VD!

i just saw my financial aid package for Creighton...😱
in the back of my head i knew it was going to be quite hefty but seeing the actual numbers and it being all loans is hitting me preeetty hard....there goes primary care haha 🙄

tuition took a big jump from last year....i wonder what it will be in 4 years :scared:

did anyone actually figure out which lender was best? what about T.H.E. instead of any of these?

I think Wells Fargo has the best deal. Haven't looked at THE yet though.

Class of 2011...I found out on Wed. (4/4) that I was accepted!!! Did anyone else interview on March 15th or 16th?

I think Wells Fargo has the best deal. Haven't looked at THE yet though.

ok, i had my brother make an excel program for me, and ASAP came out as the best for a LONG term (30 yrs). The interest rate reduction for ASAP and Wells is basically the same, so that can be removed (you save a little more w/ ASAP b/c they give it to you immediately). the 3.3 percent reduction is less than the 6 months removed at the end. (off of an orig. loan of 240K paid over 360 months...3.3 off is about 8K, and the last six months is about 10K). However, since the 8K comes off the middle, it makes a HUGE difference in total payment due to interest (you save about 50K w/ ASAP using 240 over 360 months and 8 percent interest)

over a SHORTER term (10 yrs) Wells saved about 6K over ASAP. There's probably a break even point a little over 10 yrs, but I don't feel like finding it. I would hope I can pay everything off over 10 yrs or less b/c the interest over a longer term adds up to total payments that would turn 240K into 663K. over 10 yrs that same loan would be 350K.....yea, that's only a house or very very nice car 😀

The one thing that I question Wells on is if you pay extra money, let's say every year you throw in an extra 10K, and your 10 yr term becomes much shorter.....will they still remove your last 6 months as calculated by the new shorter term, or will they say "oh, your last 6 months of the 10 yrs" in which case they will not take anything away???? 😕

so I think Wells is the best as well if you plan to repay fast, but I hope someone knows about giving extra money!

I was looking at T.H.E., and they say they can save you more in their calculators, but all I can find is a 1.3 percent int. rate reduction.....where are all the savings coming from?

Be very careful with the wording. ASAP is just an interest reduction...not points off the interest rate. I got caught up in this as well. So, they are just taking 3% off the interest accrued....

Be very careful with the wording. ASAP is just an interest reduction...not points off the interest rate. I got caught up in this as well. So, they are just taking 3% off the interest accrued....

* 3.33% principal reduction after signing up for electronic correspondence with a valid e-mail address and after making 30 initial, on-time payments
* 1.0% interest rate reduction for auto-debit payments

that's for ASAP. so 3 percent principal reduction means if you take out 240K over 4 years, and when you start repaying after 30 payments, they take 3 percent off of 240K minus whatever you have already paid, right? it's just off interest?

or are you talking about the 1 percent off interest rate red. is not making the rate from 8.5 to 7.5, but instead to just pay 1 percent of your interest? which would suck a lot, but would apply to all of them i think.

😕 why can't they just figure out which one is the best and make you take from them?

also, since they give us 13.5K per year for living expenses....how much does it really cost for rent/utilities/transportation costs/food?

You're not going to have 240K in Grad Plus loans (you are only taking out about 25K in Grad Plus times 4ish...the rest will be stafford). 100K is more accurate (240K may be more accurate overall, but the first 38.5K we take out in Stafford per year have different terms). So, they are going to take of 3K....big whoop. It is better to take off from the interest rate because (as I understand it) the Grad Plus loans are compounded on a quarterly basis. So, find a simple mortgage calculator and play with the rates. You will find that reducing the rate is going to save you far more money than taking off a small fraction of your principle, or accrued interest. Now, this all may be relatively moot if we plan on consolidating our loans when we are done with school....but I would try to save by reducing the interest rate off the bat. On the other hand, we may not consolidate, so reducing the interest rate the greatest in the long run will be better. In my opinion (I do have an MBA, but not a lot of finance experience ), Wells Fargo is the best choice because it reduces the rate initially, and continues to reduce after on-time payment. However, I do not know if they retract the benefits if you pay late etc...I have to check this out myself. I looked at T.H.E and they do not take away....so they too may be worth looking into. It is confusing, and the financial aid office point blank told me that it is my choice and they cannot help me (which really sucks). I am in the process of contacting the lenders, so I'll report back if I learn something different....but that is my initial analysis. There are financial calculators at Kipplingers, etc.

So, here is what I have found out about Wells Fargo:

Interest is Simple, compounded daily.

Everything else the same as what is printed: .5% off right off the bat. 1.5% off after 36 on-time payments. HOwever, what bites is that if you miss a payment after you get the 1.5% off it resets and goes back up to 8.00%.

You can also forbear the loans while in residency.

wow, thanks for all the info Sartre! I guess I'll look b/w Wells and T.H.E. now. I wouldn't normally worry about missing the payment, but w/ auto debit, i can imagine I will be switching my bank accounts, or can possibly run into not having money in my account as I will be poor, so the fact that THE won't reset it is also a good deal. And before I decide on that, I will very soon make my final school decision so that I don't go through all the work of setting up both schools. honestly, NYMC would be the easiest, and I would be happy at both schools, and NYMC is close to home, but it's very hard to say no to a school w/ the supportive environnment in terms of faculty and students, and the facilities/campus of Creighton, all of which i really liked! soon enough! thanks againd for the info Sartre

c'mon everyone....it's like me and sartre were the only people accepted here. are you all decided on creighton??? where are you all from?

I'm a Creighton undergrad who was accepted. Honestly though, it's doubtful that I'll be attending. Now that I've gotten all the financial aid information back, it seems like Creighton is by far the most expensive of all my options (even with a small scholarship), plus, I'm ready to get out of Omaha. Creighton is a great school, it's just that I like Loyola a bit better, not to mention I grew up very close to the campus in Chicago.

I'm going to go to the second look the weekend after next before I make my final decision, though. If you guys have any questions about Creighton, I'd be glad to try and answer them.

also, since they give us 13.5K per year for living expenses....how much does it really cost for rent/utilities/transportation costs/food?

As mentioned before, housing is pretty cheap in Omaha. I live in the Old Market in one of the nicer apartment complexes, and I pay $400 a month + utilities (usually about $75). I have 2 roommates, though. You can find a really nice 2 bedroom apartment for probably $850 a month. Utilities here are about the same as everywhere else in the country. I've found gasoline is usually 10-15 cents cheaper here than in bigger cities (Chicago at least).

hey bkadow,

congrats on loyola!!! that's honestly a school I was really looking forward to hear from, and still haven't heard...i'm going to have to guess rejection 🙄 One of my good friends is from Chicago and I think I would have loved to try that city out.

Thanks. I'm pretty excited. Love the school - still trying to justify to myself the huge tuition though.

I forgot to mention. There are a TON of Creighton undergraduates who will be M1's at Creighton next year. Lots of them are awesome and will be great classmates. You will have a great class.

i know the class will be great. it's really hard to justify the cost to move so far away from my family though...i think i'm leaning away again. of course the school is a great place to study medicine, but nymc will give me the same things w/ small differences that i honestly don't think matter...my biggest concerns w/ fairly equal schools are cost (also same) and i guess location (omaha is nice, but far from family)

CP complained that no one was talking 😀 plus, i don't want to study for my neuroscience test. finally got my official rejection from UWash 🙁 i emailed an M2 i know at creighton to let her know that i will (99.9999999999%) be attending in the fall. i am actually really happy. yes, UWash would have been nice because it would have been close to home and cheaper, but honestly, i was much more impressed with creighton. uwash is a top notch program, don't get me wrong, but they really didn't show me that on my interview day. i will most likely be living with this M2 in some really big house with lots of other med students. probably going to go and check it out before hand. um......how much more can i procrastinate........i dunno. i have less than 4 weeks of school left, that includes finals. i honestly never thought i would have senioritis this bad. then again, this is the first time in 4 years that i don't have a coach looming over my head. yay!

Does anyone know if our GradPlus lenders will also be our Stafford Lenders?

Choosing a lender is giving me a headache...just when I think I have it figured out...something else seems to pop up. 😡

Why can't school be free?

i know you'll love it, spospo! That's a far move for you, right?

Sartre, I thought that one lender was for all of the loans.....😕

i know you'll love it, spospo! That's a far move for you, right?

it's a far move from washington state, but not too bad from denver. i have my lease here through august, so i am leaving most of my stuff here when i go back home after graduation. on my way to omaha i will come through denver to get it all. i am trying not to think about that right now though. a little too scary for me.

Creighton scholarships?

To those of you who have received your fin. aid offers...

Does the school offer much outside of loans? Are there merit based, need based or minority based scholarships? Has anyone been offered a scholarship?
If yes, how much? and what was the scholarship for???

I remember seeing (i think it was on USNews website) that only 15% of students get scholarships...not so hot. I think they are merit based as well. Most going to Creighton will be using loan money. Maybe they are more friendly in the 3rd and 4th years with scholarship??? Not 100% sure.

I, also, ended up not using Wells Fargo or any of the preferred lenders. Doing some research (finaid.org) most students never earn those "bonuses" and will consolidate the loans anyway (sometimes well before graduation). I went with T.H.E. b/c they are non-profit, and allow you the option of consolidation w/out loss of benefits (assuming your loans are all from T.H.E). Best of luck to the others...it's a financial jungle doing this.

wow, good info sartre, thanks again! I think I'll go w/ T.H.E. if I go, although that's seeming slimmer by the day

y'all get the email today/yesterday/whenever? general info about orientation dates etc? cool. it said in the emial that the women's coats do not come in 'tall' so i am probably going to have to order a men's coat. gosh darn being tall and stuff. hope everyone has a good weekend. 🙂

Yea, I got the email the same day. You'll definitely need a tall coat 😀 I should really decide now that all this immunization/fin aid/orientation stuff is beginning to pile up 😎

the 4th year schedule has very vague requirements such as one critical care selective from an approved list, etc, which are cool b/c it makes the rest all elective. my question: it says a req. is to participate in the Senior Colloquium...what is this? a research presentation? i hate research presentations...😎
