Thank you in advance to everyone who provides their input.
I am extremely grateful to have been accepted into both of these programs, and now I am looking to narrow down where I will be attending. I am from the Chicagoland area and in addition to seeking a highly supportive medical school community, I would prefer to stay close to my support system (long-term SO and friends) and family in the Midwest. That being said I am not against moving further out if it means a substantially better education (resources, connections, etc.). Although unsure of what I would like to specialize in I am currently interested in competitive specialties related to surgery such as general surgery, ENT, and plastics as well as cardiology (I know that this means I would have to go through IM first and then the fellowship). I ultimately would like to match back to the Chicagoland area or Arizona.
CREIGHTON (Omaha Campus):
Pros:
-Closer to home (7 hour drive)
-Closer to SO's medical school (7 hours, but not Chicago)
-Students seem to be very happy and all-around supported by faculty
-Service mission and emphasis on student well-being
-Omaha is not Chicago, but is a good-sized city (400-500k population size) with plenty to do outside of school
-Accessible faculty willing to support individual student goals
-Strong match list
-Early clinical involvement
-Global Health opportunities
-Jesuit ideology makes student body and faculty seem more approachable and cohesive
-TEAMS- mentoring from upperclassmen and faculty (good for providing direction and connecting to faculty in specialty of choice)
-MD/MBA dual degree program
-H/P/F (Although not P/F, provides a bit more incentive to do well in classes)
-Recently invested $200 million into hospitals and teaching facilities (Both Omaha and Phoenix campus)
Cons:
-Traditional 2-year curriculum
-Unranked by USNWR, but lower than Brown in PD Rankings (66 vs. 31)
-Post graduation debt is about $70k more than Brown's according to MSAR
-Low NIH research funding, although they emphasized ease of getting involved in research and producing publications on interview day
-Less diverse student body
-AOA prior to Match
-No ENT department
BROWN:
Pros:
-Much better name recognition
-Higher PD Ranking (31 vs. 66)
-Only medical school in Rhode Island
-Emphasized how students and faculty are respected and treated alike in their collaborative and highly supportive community
-Urban setting, but Providence has lots of trails and water and is a very walkable city
-Covers all financially demonstrated need with scholarships
-Post graduation debt is $70k less than Creighton's according to MSAR
-Scholarly Concentrations
-Lots of research funding
-Amazing match list
-Diverse student body
-P/F
-AOA determined after Match
Cons:
-15 hour drive or 2 hour flight from home (would like to be able to drive in case of anything urgent)
-17 hour drive or 2.5 hour flight to SO
-Have never lived or been to much of the East Coast
-Imposter Syndrome given "prestige"?
-Much older hospitals, although beautiful learning facility
-No ENT department
Ultimately, at least off of first impressions, Creighton's community appears more genuine and committed to its students well being and success. The added benefit of being close to my family, friends and SO is super valuable. However, Brown's name definitely carries weight and its notably better ranking has me slightly confused and wondering (especially given that Step 1 is now P/F) if I would be making a mistake attending Creighton over Brown.
