I was recently informed about the close to entirely web-based Pharm.D. program at Creighton and I was blown away by the concept because it seems almost unheard of to receive a professional doctorate almost entirely through distance ed. Apparently labs are completed on-site in Omaha at Creighton during summers. This sounds too good to be true......well, if you're not loaded it is. I figured the total cost comes to in excess of 110k!!!!! Yeah, that's right. I currently work at Walgreens and they do offer some monies but nothing close to the amount I'd need. Anyone know of companies that you can sign with that would shell out that ridiculous amount of dough? Any realistic ideas? Thanks for any thoughts.

the web program is designed for non traditional students. Most have some medical background so the work should be a cake walk for them. Some kept their full time job to pay for the degree.

It's called "student loans" - you can get one just like the rest of us.

As for Creighton - most pharmacy students feel about it like med students feel about Carribbean med schools...it's a joke.

Will Stafford loans be provided for anywhere near that amount or is another source (e.g. private bank loans) required? By the time I finish my current program I will likely have 70k debt, I know there is a limit for federal loans but I cant recall what it is at the moment

I wasn't aware of that but it's really irrelevant if one is a good student and also doesnt care whether or not other pharmacists feel they are better based on the school's name on their degree. Pay is rarely based on the school u graduate from.

It's true that you can get hired anywhere with a PharmD...IF you pass the boards. There is concern with the quality of a program like this. I would definitiely look into the board passage rates for those graduating from the program. You also have to wonder about the cost...why does it cost so much if faculty don't even have to show up to teach live classes? You are being charged for the convenience of a degree, not for quality education. If someone is truly committed to getting a PharmD degree, I don't feel he or she should do it half way or take the easy way out. How do you expect to have references for jobs, residency, etc, when you will not even get to know faculty? The opportunity to interact will fellow students (aka your future colleagues) also will not be there.

Not true. while most people in the web-based program do have either a B.S. or M.S. degree most do not have prior medical experience unless you count a pharmacy tech. There are few in the class of 2008 that have only two years of college. While my wife has a MS in pharm chem and a BS in Biochem I would think she would say it is in no way a cake walk. My wife has a full time job so they pay her tuition but this defeinitely adds to the difficulty level. The campus based and web based students take the same exams. My wife has her exams proctored at a local community college. The web based program students have a slightly better avg on exams than the campus based students so I am told. I believe the web-based program is cheaper than the campus based program but not by much. Creighton is a private school. Look at the cost of their medical school. My tuition for med school is 33K/year so anything at creighton does not seem too shabby.

The program should in no way be compared to some distant ed classes that many of us have taken at some time or another. They (Creighton) have their act together and there are very few glitches.

Don't forget the 4th year, probably the most important year of school which is obviously not distant but can be done anywhere in the country provided there are rotations available. We live in the Philly area which means my wife will do her rotations at one of the several wonderful hospitals here. If we lived in say Abilene, TX things would be different...
