what crimes keep you out of med school?
dr.z said:Felony convictions may, but anything less I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know that there are people who get in even with felony on their record so I'm not sure where the cut off is exactly.
Khenon said:Good question! I don't know, but my friend is totally freaked out because she got a minor infraction on her school record at her undergrad university. She was walking back to her dorm, and had been drinking (under age), and the dorm resident (in charge) caught her. It's not on any kind of police record, but I guess if one were to dig far enough this incident would come up (it didn't come up on a basic criminal record search though). Anyway, she didn't put it on her app, and she's afraid the schools are going to do a thorough search and see it and think she's a lier (she didn't put it because she didn't think it qualified as a misdemeanor, but then found out later it technically is). Anyway, I'd be curious to know if something like this could really keep her out of med school.
Wow, that's great news! Now I can pursue my dreams without sacrificing one or the other. I've always wanted to gank a car and jump a bridge---even before I wanted to be a doctor. I actually started thinking about becoming a doctor so I could help out when young dreamchasers realized their aspirations and most likely set off the air bag in the process. Get me my racing sunglasses. Let's do this.MadameLULU said:I have a friend who stole a car and crashed it during his junior year in college. He got accepted to med school (Wash U, U. of Colorado).

The student lied on his application. He did not report other offenses (such as assault, etc.) The school didn't find out until after the tragic incident occurred. I remember reading articles soon after the incident about how med schools might start criminal background checks. An admissions officer at Pittburgh said in one of these articles that the applicants who had declared criminal offenses on their application did not gain admittance. One had killed his girlfriend if I remember right. The officer stated that he strongly questioned how criminals could save lives when they have destroyed it before. I tend to agree with that statement. I doubt that underage drinking would affect someone's application, unless it was a DUI.
Most of us ?stoic said:most of us have done things for which we could have gotten into some kind of criminal trouble (underage drinking, smoking pot, vandalism, vicious pranks, etc, etc)

I completely agree. I've been trying to ease her mind about the whole thing, but she's so worried about it. Her main worry isn't that they're going to care about the infraction. What she's worried about is that she DIDN'T list it, so now she thinks they'll find it and question her ethics. Anyway, I don't think they'd even find it (she herself did a basic background check on herself and it didn't come up), so it's probably a moot issue. I can understand her concern though . . . of all the things to keep you out of med school, right! 🙂stoic said:this isn't going to matter. i promise. your friend can relax.

seriously, what is wrong with NOT doing something bad? you are like everyone else who has done stuff bad and is all worked up about it to the point that you gotta make others feel bad for being good.... good job man....
stoic said:so maybe i know a rotten bunch of med students, but i think it's rather more likely that med students are normal people who make normal mistakes.
MiesVanDerMom said:I talked to admissions at my number one school pick and explained my situation and they said they didn't know how it would be looked upon and I would just have to apply and see.
miesvandermom said:I can't really afford to spend thousands of dollars taking the rest of my pre-reqs, taking the MCATs and applying (not to mention time and energy) only to take a gamble to see if these arrogant admissions people are in a good mood or not the day my case comes their way. What a load of crap. If you don't want someone who committed an idiotic misdemeanor mistake then just tell me.
There's got to be something else I can do with my life that isn't this ridiculous.
