Given two choices what would you do and why?

Preface- 35 years old, mother of 3 (11,13,17), married to a awesome husband very supportive, RN for 8 years with a major case of wanting to practice Primary Care!! I have friends that are NP's and I don't think I can handle anymore nursing theory!!

A) Finish pre-reqs (1.5yrs) hopefully matriculate at the age of 38, attend a DO school away from home and not within driving distance of our home. The only real communication would be video chat, phones, FB, etc. Husband and kids would visit every 2-3 months this would last for 4 years.

B) Go to a International Program in 1 year, so matriculate at 36. The program is through UQ/Ochsner two years in Aussie and then 2 years in New Orleans which I live within 75 miles of. I would see family in December and then 4 weekends during those 2 years.....everything else is video chat, cell phones, fb, etc

Any takers on this? I think the experience of Aussie would be awesome, the time away from family is shorter, of course I worry about the red tape since the program is so new the cost is 10-12k higher than the closest two DO programs.

If I got a do over I would have not messed up my freshmen year and would be trying to stay local that's not what happened though. Since there are no DO schools in my state and the 2 Allo programs are way out of reach not saying miracles can't happen.....I'm just being realistic.

I'm leaning Aussie because of the experience and length of time away.....thoughts? Just remember Primary Care 🙂

This is a tough situation. A colleague of mine was in a similar situation, and ended up deferring medical school entry for a few more years until the kids were older.

My advice would be to attend a U.S. medical school at all costs, and see if your family can move with you if you need to move. New programs and hybrid overseas/U.S. programs are a gamble because there is no real outcome data to show how you will be trained (or perceived by residency directors).

Good luck!

I too would have a hard time leaving kids.

There are other options....

Is your husband's job mobile or can he find something else to do?

Rather then going overseas, build up application and stay in the US then relocate family with you....

That's what I would do...but again I dont yet have kids
