For the neuro exam on cs, when assessing the cranial nerves, for nerves 9 and 10, did anyone actually test the "gag reflex"? I know the corneal reflex was listed as a "should not be tested" but i didn't find any reference to the gag reflex.

I don't do that, I just ask them to say ahhh and look for an even rise of the soft palate and pharyngeal structures.

I wouldnt, they specifically ask that you dont do uncomfortable/painful maneuvers, like deep abdominal palpation, on the SPs.

If you make the SP puke, you very likely aren't going to get a good score.

Yeah, especially since it is supposedly the SP who fills out the checklist after you leave the room:laugh:

so for exam that you are suppose to do but not on the patient, do you just verbally say you would do that and write it down on the paper to verify that you would have done it if it was a real patient?

You can write them down as tests that need to be ordered on the soap note. And in the room you say something like "I'm concerned about your lower abdominal pain and after I talk with my attending, I'm going to have to do a pelvic exam" Actually I still do that in real life if I'm not sure if the attending will want a pelvic or not.
