I'm currently a student at UCLA. I'm a junior and I have a 3.3 science GPA and about a 3.5 cumulative GPA. However, I've gotten off to a bad start this quarter. I started off taking four classes (16 units) and dropped a class WITHOUT a W, so I could invest more time in Organic Chemistry 3. I took the first midterm and didn't do very well. The average was about a 50% and I got below the average. I got my midterm back and I got a C or C- on it with the curve. We have one more midterm left and a final. What should I do? I really wanted to do well in this class because I got a B in OChem 1 and a C+ in Ochem 2. I feel like I can't afford to get another C in OChem. If don't improve on the next midterm, I'm thinking of dropping with a W instead of getting C or lower in it. How bad will this look to dental schools if I drop with a W, and therefore only take 2 upper div bio classes for a grade this quarter? Do I still have time to redeem myself? Do people get into dental school with C's in ochem?

I didn't go through a situation exactly like yours but I got a C in o-chem 2 and I got accepted. Good luck

Just ace the DAT especially OCHEM and ull do fine.

You can still bring up your grade on the next two tests. It's not too late. Don't give up yet. Just ace the next midterm and final. Do you have Kwon? If you do, stick with it. You have to take 30c eventually, and she's not that bad compared to everyone else who teaches it.

I'm sure you can bring that grade up; you'll be fine.

i got A's in all Chem course UConn what what!

HOW is this helping the OP? Way to be a jerk...

Anyway, to the OP- I got a B- in OC I and a C in OC II...so I studied my butt off for that section of the DAT and pulled a 20. Like someone else said, you still have time to improve the grade, so don't throw in the towel just yet. As long as you don't make C's a huge habit on your transcript, I think you will be ok. Good luck and studddddy hard!

You can't compare any science classes at UCLA to most schools in the US.

And to the OP stick to the class, don't give up.

Considering your taking a 3rd level OChem class already puts you a step above...then again, I dont know how UCLA works so it may be equivalent...nonetheless, keep ya head up and stop assuming you're going to do bad. Put in the extra hours/work or whatever, and do what you gotta do and bust out those exams. Dental school is MUCH harder than Ochem, so if this class is killing you then just think of another career, but if its what you want...suck it up, stop crying and GO STUDY!

Dont want to seem like the mean one, but im just keeping it real!

If I can give you any advice its too avoid C-'s like the plague. I had a number of C's prior to dental school but never a C- in a science course. Not only does this mean a retake, it means a bad note on your transcript. As for W's. I had my share of those as well. I am not saying that you shouldn't worry about C's and W's because you should, but I got accepted into dental school with a few W's in sciences, but never a retake. I got a C in general chem and a C in intro O Chem in my first semester. Then the next semester I dropped two chem courses making them W's. This made my journey to dental school longer but I finally got my bcp gpa up to a 3.48 and now undergrad is just a distant dream (I was going to say nightmare lol). Anyways I hope this gives you some hope and makes you realize that the fate of the world does not rest on one class even if it is a C. Anyways good luck and keep your chin up, and remember the semester isn't over yet. Its still easier to do well the first time then to make back bad grades. All the best.

:luck:

I've had one C in my entire life, and that was in orgo 1. Given, I redeemed myself slightly by getting a B in orgo 2 (I know they like to see positive trends), but if it's any consolation, I've been on four interviews and no one has questioned my C in orgo. 😛 I've also received two acceptances.. so, yes! You can get into dental school with a C in Ochem! 😀

If this helps, I have 1 F, 1 W, 2 C+s, 2 B-s on my transcript and I STILL got in.

C's in both Ochem 1 and 2, and I got in just fine, I think you'll be alright. Just do decent on the DAT. Good luck! And although a W here and there don't really matter, taking less than 10 units in the end might not look so great.

Good luck!

Don't sweat the C if you can't avoid it. just knock out the orgo part on DAT. I got a C in orgo 1 and a B in orgo 2 and orgo was my best section on DAT. got a C in gen chem2 also and still got into every school i applied too (except Harvard).

Just do well on DAT

I got a C in orgo1 and a C+ in orgo 2 and got in. I say don't worry about it, especially if they're your only C's. I studied really hard for the orgo part of the DAT (which I found to be MUCH easier than the material that was covered in my classes) and ended up getting a 22 on it. So just rock the orgo and you're fine!

OH NO! Not a C! now youll never get into dental school! really though? I've had 3 of them and i still got in 🙂

I have 4 F's, ~5 C's, and 1 D on my transcript. (Though i do have a major upward trend)

you will be fine!
