CSPM Housing Quesion

Hey,

I am attending CSPM for fall 2011. I know the area right around school can be a little unsafe and I do have a car to drive.
But I was wondering where students live?

The best neighborhoods? Buildings? Any advice that would help me find an apartment that I would be happy with. Pref. a studio...

Sorry I am not a student yet, I'm just a pre-pod but I can sort of help you with that cuz I go to school at UC Berkeley which is only ~12 min drive and ~20 min by bus away. Depending on how far you want to live, I think living in the Berkeley area will be good. You don't necessarily need to drive, but if you want you can. South Berkeley is generally cheaper and has lots of housing around since the campus is a few blocks up. Obviously the farther you get away from the UCB campus the cheaper it is, but the better for you since you'll be closer to Oakland. If I was going to school at Oakland, I'd probably stay around the Berkeley area. Hope this helped! Sorry I can't really give details about places in Oakland since I don't really go down there myself.
