Hi everyone!

I haven't seen a thread for the 2018-2019 MSOT program at CSUDH yet, so I decided to make one. This will be my second time applying to CSUDH (and hopefully my last!). I am also planning to apply to USC and West Coast University. CSUDH is my first choice because of location and cost, but I'm no longer picky and would gladly accept ANY program's admission. I don't want to waste any more time considering the required degree for OTs will be a doctorates degree starting 2025. I don't think I have the stamina nor the patience for a doctorates program lol.

Here are my stats:
Cum GPA: 3.68
Prereq GPA: 4.0
GRE: Verbal 153, Quant 150, AWA 4.5
LOR: 1 from OT, 1 from my supervisor, 1 from English professor
Experience: Over 1 year as a behavioral aide for clients diagnosed with autism
125 observation hours at 2 different outpatient clinics for children as well as a rehabilitation center for adults and seniors recovering from brain injuries

When I applied last year, I found these forums helpful not only to determine where my application stands but also for emotional support (waiting for decision letters to go out was excruciating, but having people to suffer with made it a little more tolerable lol). Feel free to post your stats and join in on the excitement 🙂

Hello! I'm applying to CSUDH as well. Not hopeful to get in but still trying anyway lol.
Stats:

Cum GPA: 3.62 (in undergrad, may be less or more depending on my courses I took after)
Pre-req GPA: around 3.5 depending
GRE: V156 Q145 AW4.0
LOR: 1 from a naturopathic physician I worked for, 1 from an OT, and 1 from a past coworker
Experience: Worked as a clinic tech in a rehab facility for 6 months
Observation: 50 hours in SNF, 50 hours in Outpatient, 40 hours in Inpatient acute care

Good luck to all!

Are you graduating this fall? I think the school states that the applicant’s Bachelor of Arts or Science degree needs to be completed by the time of application submission.
Oh no I graduated 4 years ago haha, so I've long had my BA!

You have great stats! I called their office for occupational therapy a few weeks ago and they told me that their cumulative gpa was a 3.6 so i'm surprised they didn't accept you. Honestly these competition for these programs are so bad that I'm thinking of applying out of state.

Thank you for starting this thread! This is also my second time applying for the MSOT program at CSUDH. I was waitlisted last year and ultimately was not accepted, but I'm not giving up. I also plan on applying to other schools, but CSUDH is my first choice. I received my BA degree about 10 years ago and have been working in an unrelated industry since. I couldn't be more ready and excited to start graduate school and start a new career as an OT. Good luck everyone!

Here are my stats:
Cum GPA: 3.4
Prereq GPA: 4.0
GRE: Verbal 156, Quant 149, AWA 4.5
LOR: 1 from OT, 1 from my employer, 1 from professor
Experience: 80 hours at a Pediatric clinic, 40 hours at a Rehab clinic/SNF, OTR 410: Intro to OT class at CSUDH

I was also waitlisted my first time applying. Since then, I increased my AWA score (I got a 4 the first time I applied) and replaced one of my LORs with a stronger one. I was aiming for a 5 on the AWA but got a 4.5 instead. I know the admissions committee prefer a 5+ so I'm a little discouraged :/ Do you mind sharing your stats last year when you got waitlisted?

Hi bh8. My GRE score is the same as the last time I applied when I was waitlisted. I had already taken it three times, so I chose to focus on other areas to strengthen my application. Instead, I retook Anatomy to get my B to an A, so I have all As in my prereqs this time around. I also volunteered an additional 40 hours in another setting, and took the Intro to Occupational Therapy class that CSUDH offers. I also replaced two of my LORs with new, hopefully stronger letters. If I had more time, I probably would've taken the GRE again to try to get my AWA to a 5, but I feel like I did my best with the time I had. Your stats are great! You shouldn't feel discouraged at all! : )

@LKOT: I will be an older student as well, if accepted! Good to know there are other older students applying 🙂

This will be my first time applying:
  • Undergrad GPA: 3.56
  • Prereq GPA: 4.0
  • GRE: Verbal 155, Quant 148, AWA 4.5
  • LOR: 1 from my anatomy professor, 1 from my employer, 1 from an OT
  • I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem as if they care much about experience, which is unfortunate since I have a lot of it due to age. They barely provide ask about employment.

That's so exciting! Changing careers at an older age is not an easy thing to do, so I think we should both feel pretty good about being in a position to apply. It takes a lot of commitment and hard work to get to this point. Your stats look great! I'm hoping they do interviews this year. I think it could really help both of us as older students. It would give us an opportunity to talk about our life experience.

Thanks for sharing, LKOT! I also took the GRE 3 times! I studied so hard and honestly don't think I can score higher than my current scores :/ Your stats are great, that's why I was surprised you didn't get in. What other schools are you planning to apply to?

You have great stats! I also don't think they consider experience as heavily as GRE scores or GPA. I remember reading a forum from a few years ago and an applicant with a history major and unrelated work experience got accepted. I'm hoping they take into account the LORs!

Hi all!!

I just turned in my application today, and have been checking my app status and it says under the academic career "Postbacc and Ext Ed Credit" I'm guessing that just a fancy way of saying masters lol? I feel kind of silly asking that question.

Also it says I have a fee I still need to pay under application fee but I paid the fee through Cal State Apply, anyone else having this problem when looking at their app status on myCSUDH?

Once you mail in your application packet will admissions send you an email confirming they have received it?

Thank You

Yes, they sent me a notice
I sent in my app packet via usps priority mail on the 11th but did not receive confirmation it was received so I called on the 15th and she said they had my application but I'm not sure if there is a more formal confirmation usually sent out. Also my app status says fee not paid

Hi rachelgreen123,

I have the same problem! Please let me know if anything changes in your portal. I'll be calling CSUDH tomorrow to follow up and will keep you posted as well 🙂

I actually called and forgot to update my post on here, but they reassured me that that didn't indicate anything about me having to pay any extra fee and that sometimes it takes a while to process the fee through Cal State Apply! But to be safe I would still call!

Great, thanks for the update! Do you mind sharing your stats? Also, are you planning to apply to any other schools?

Not at all!

Major: Human Biology with minor in Cognitive Science
Undergrad GPA: 3.2
Prereq: 3.5-3.7 depending on school
GRE: 152 V 149 Q and 4.5 AW

Observation hours:
71 in peds
over 500 in Hand therapy, I did 100 during my undergrad and then started working as an aide in the same facility.

Relevant work:
PT/OT aide for about a year now

I have a publication from my undergraduate research in cognitive science

LOR's:
1 from OT in hand therapy setting
1 from OT in peds setting

My stats are not great but I'm staying positive. I applied during the last cycle and got accepted to three(AT Still, Dominican, and UIndy) but unfortunately due to personal issues I wasn't able to accept to here I am again

I am applying to other schools:
AT Still, Dominican, U of St. A, SJSU, Loma Linda, Stanbridge, Samuel Merritt, Northern Arizona, University of Washington, University of Texas HS San Antonio, and West Coast LA

I am probably going to submit to all 3 next week! just waiting to get the volunteer forms back from the OT's so I can upload them for Loma Linda and I'll be all set!

Sweet! I submitted mine 2 weeks ago and it got verified and now the schools have it. So now the waiting game begins!

Hey everyone! Just curious if anyone has heard back yet from CSUDH? They said the latest we find out is around Thanksgiving...I am wondering when they start sending out acceptances and if interviews are happening this year...?

My stats are:
undergrad gpa: 3.31
pre-req gpa: 4.0
GRE V-155 Q-155 AWA-4.5

about 100 hours of volunteer work at a hospital in the OT/rehab department
letters of rec from 1 OT, 2 professors (from pre-req classes)
past work experience- personal trainer for 3 years, PT aide 1 year

I am hoping my undergrad gpa isn't too low. I did major in biology, but I don't know if they take your major into account. Unfortunately, you can't go back in time and redo that. I did take the GRE twice to bump up my writing to a 4.5 from a 4, so hopefully that and my prereq gpa will help!

Good luck to everyone!

Hi y’all!

I’m applying to CSUDH for the first time and the wait to hear back has been soooooo stressful. I’m constantly doubting myself but I thought participating in these forums would ease my thoughts. Here are some of my stats:

Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.75
Pre-req GPA 3.76
GRE: Q-145, V-149, AWA-4.5
Hours: 100 in hand therapy, 100 in geriatrics

I’m obsessing over my verbal and quant scores but i’m also trying to remind myself that it is not the end of the world if i’m not accepted.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

I am obsessing over my AWA score as I only have a 4.0 while most people here have a 4.5. I hope this is not the reason I'm not accepted.

Hey everyone. Thanks for starting this thread. This is my first year applying to CSUDH OT. Like some others on this thread, OT will be a mid-life career change for me. Here are my stats:

Major: Organizational Leadership
GPA: 3.87
Pre-req GPA: 3.85
GRE: Q-145, V-162, AWA-4
Hours: 100 in pediatrics
LOR: 3 OTs and 2 employers (both in child development field)
Experience: 4.5 years teaching "baby & me" classes at a child development center with a focus on neurodevelopment; 2 yrs working as a Child Development Specialist doing early intervention for birth-3 yr olds with developmental delays.

My interest is in pediatrics, so that's been my focus as I prepped my application. I'm also applying to USC and if I don't get into CSUDH or USC I'll apply to West Coast next summer. Bummed that my GRE AWA score isn't higher (took it twice), but hoping my high GPA's will help.

Just FYI - I spoke to someone in the CSUDH OT office today and she said they sometimes do applicant interviews, but not always. I saw people posting about getting called for interviews around this time last year on another thread, so I was curious.

Good luck everyone!!

Hey everyone, it seems that everyone in this forum (including myself) has an AWA score of 4 or 4.5. I took the GRE twice and got a 4.5 both times, I was really aiming for a 5. Does the admissions committee really take the AWA score heavily into account?

Hi! I am not too sure how heavily they take it into account but know they really like to see a 4.5 or above! Did you go to the information meeting? It's definitely one of the factors they consider (unfortunately) but I think they combine all of our factors and then take the highest averages... crossing fingers for us!

Your stats are great!! What did you change from your previous year from applying? I am sure you will get in this time- good luck!!

Hey guys! I’m planning to apply to CSUDH OT program in the spring 2019 after I graduate from undergrad! Here are my stats

Major: CSUF Kinesiology with a concentration in Clinical Movement Science

Current GPA: 3.79, Prerequisite GPA I believe is a 4.0 (A’s in all 4 of anatomy and physiology classes, etc)

GRE scores: I know I am one point below either the math or the verbal section but the other is within range. A 4 on the writing section (I keep hearing they want a 4.5?)

Volunteer hours: about 70 in pediatric but will be doing another 120 hours possibly at the same pediatric clinic for my required internship

I was going to apply to USC this fall but decided to do CSUDH and if I didn’t get in, then I’d apply to USC , USA San macros, Lima Linda, etc. I’m hoping these stats are okay but I know they base acceptances on the entire pool of applicants

Hi all, I've been reading this thread and last year's thread for a while but finally decided to make an account! It's my first time applying to CSUDH 🙂 here are my stats:

Undergrad GPA: 3.69
Pre-req GPA: 4.0
GRE: V167 Q156 AW4.5
LOR: 1 from adult day program director (boss), 1 from an OT, and 1 from my psych prereqs prof
Experience: worked in elementary schools as a teacher assistant for ~4 years, worked as a counselor for adults with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses for 2.5 years
Observation: 110 hrs in a pediatric outpatient setting

I'm getting antsy now that it's finally November! Anyone looking for roommates near CSUDH if we get in? I'm from the San Fernando Valley and I think that commute might kill me long-term.

If I get in I’ll be commuting from the SFV. Not fun, but I can’t move so I’ll definitely be interested in carpooling if anyone else is!! 🙂

Hey everyone, I have also been reading up on this years forum and the past couple year's forums and I finally decided to make an account and join this. Here are my stats:

Undergrad GPA: 3.693
Pre-req GPA: 3.8 (B in Stats)
GRE: V152 Q 153 AW 4.5
LOR: 1 from OTR, 1 from A&P Professor, 1 from supervisor of internship at a Child development School
Experience: 200 hours volunteering at an OT Karate program for children with special needs, 50 hours shadowing OTs, 300 hours internship at a child development school for special needs, 1 week mission trip for children with special needs, and now working in ABA therapy

Kinda nervous because it's my first time applying and I've only worked/ volunteered with pediatrics but we shall see! Hoping these next weeks fly by fast till we find out!

Hey all! This is my second time applying to CSUDH only (didn't get in last year), and it feels like I'm putting all my eggs into one basket again.

Undergrad GPA: 3.529
Prereq GPA: 3.9
GRE: Q 154, W 152, AW 5
I took OTR410 instead of volunteer hours though I volunteered at a Pediatric therapy center for a couple summers.
LOR: 1 from professor and 2 from work (since I took OTR410, they said I could choose anyone to write a 3rd letter instead of the OT letter)

Hoping to hear back really soon!

Hi LVOT, do you mind sharing your stats the first time you applied to DH?

Hey all, I just received an email from CSUDH saying I was accepted to the program! MyCSUDH still says "Your file is complete and has been sent to the appropriate department for review," so check your emails! It says they are also sending a hard copy in the mail. The deadline to accept is 11/21, so I assume more decisions will be sent out after that date as well. Good luck everyone!

Congrats!!! You had a great GRE verbal score!
Anybody else get acceptances?? 🙁 Nothing here.

The only thing that changed dramatically was my writing score on the GRE. I had a 4 previously, so that's what I really worked on to better my chances. I haven't heard anything back yet. Good luck!

Out of curiosity - does anyone know if CSUDH normally sends email acceptances?

Good for you. That is earlier than expected since they said we will hear back in late Nov? Anyway, you verbal score is crazily high.

Hey all! I just got an email acceptance today! I'm not sure how they are sending them out in terms of dates, but I'm wishing you all the best!

Congrats!! I’m surprised we’re not seeing a lot more people confirming acceptances. Noticing that all the acceptances come around 11am

Congrats! 🙂 I wonder what their reasoning is behind the different batches. Seems like it would cause so much less confusion to send the first round out all at once...

Hi all,

Been watching this thread for a while but finally decided to post because I got accepted today at 10am. For reference, I applied directly to the school without using OTCAS. They sent me an email of the hard copy letter. Congrats to all! Hopefully those waiting patiently will hear back soon.
Congrats!! Do you mind sharing your stats with us? Thanks!

Hi all! I've also been just watching this forum for months, and also wanted to share that I got accepted! The date on the letter says yesterday, November 7th (my birthday is Nov 7, so THE BEST BDAY GIFT EVER), but I received the acceptance email today at 10am. Also applied directly to Cal State Apply, not OTCAS. Delivered physical copy directly to the department on September 14, a day before deadline.
