CT anesthesiology fellowship 2022

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You should go to as many interviews as possible. You never know which program will surprise you. Also, it really does not cost you money and time anymore to attend additional interview. I know a few people who felt "confident" and turned down interviews and they went unmatched. Unless you know for 100% (geographic reasons) that you would rather go unmatched than to match at the program you are thinking about cancelling, I recommend that you attend all of them.

Agree with this. A star resident at our shop took 10/15 interviews, ranked all and went unmatched. You never know...

I always read stories like these and I still find it hard to believe. Some of my previous seniors and buddies apply to 60+ programs, go on 3-5 interviews because that is all they could get, poor board scores, ITE scores in the 20-25th percentile, some were IMGs, no publications, mediocre letters and were not chief resident and still match places.

Those who matched last year fit your description more accurately and we’re willing to take any program no matter what. The “star” was shooting the moon as far as location and prestige so I think that was part of the issue.

Everything is so relevant. I am not sure what criteria do u use to name a resident star vs mediocre but I met some applicants down the road who were coming from star programs and were the worst by far, attitude-wise.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of “connections” and strategies that some “mediocre” residents are nicely utilizing behind the scenes.

I foresee this year’s match to be the most surprising ever not only for the applicants but also for the programs themselves which I believe will have many spots unmatched at the end just because zoom interviews are gonna be very misleading (best applicants attending many more interviews than usually -> PDs will ignore the less competitive applicants etc etc). Agree with the advice above to attend as many interviews as you are offered.

never ended up hearing from vanderbilt.

has anyone applying cardiac-only (not dual) heard back from duke recently, or is that one looking more like a silent rejection?

Heard from them and based on SFMatch interview dates they still have dates and spots open (through May 14), so maybe worth reaching out to them if you haven't?

I imagine that the interview season is almost complete. Any thoughts about ranking? Disappointments? Nice surprises?

Disappointed a few programs filled internally but was only told until applications went out. Only a few bucks but still feel ripped off.

Oh, 100%. This was really dumb.

Oregon, if I am not mistaken, was the only program that actually didn't give you an option to apply because they filled internally before match.

Why couldn't other program do that?

How is everyone feeling about their rank list?
Rank list mostly set. Trying to determine middle to end of list. Essentially lesser prestige Program I liked vs better name where I didn’t particularly like the faculty on my interview day. Wouldn’t have been a debate for me in residency match list but obviously this fellowship is only one year. I feel like I could probably tolerate anywhere for a year so leaning more prestige but still some time to go

As a current ACTA fellow I would urge you to go to a place you want - this is where you will learn the most. Do not go chasing a name. It is so evident those who chase a big name (and are not happy at that place) and "lack" clinical skills versus those who went to a "no name" program and come out very strong.

Location aside, any thoughts on UNMC (Nebraska) vs Thomas Jefferson? Not a whole lot of information out there about these programs.

Nebraska doesn’t get the love it should. They produce strong, well-rounded fellows, clinically and technically. And they have a great periop echo program, both TEE and TTE. They’re towards the top of my rank list. I don’t know much about Thomas Jefferson though.

Struggling ranking between a very good home program vs moving for those top programs that people often mention. Any advice?
Most people seem to say it’s worth it to go to a different program to learn how things might be done differently vs staying at your home program.

It’s one year. Go to the top program

Go to a different program. If you play your cards right during CA-3 year, you should learn a bulk of what the fellows learn in the beginning of their fellowship, so you will learn more by going to a different institution where they may have a different way of doing things.

Went through the same thing. My home program was fine, and I was a little bummed when it didn’t work out. Went to a top program and didn’t regret it at all. Agreed with others. It’s just a year.
