Asking for a friend (which I know a lot of you won't believe, but still).

To make a long story short, my friend CTE'd at a school but didn't know to remove herself from waitlists and didn't get any push in this sense from her schools either. She was offered an acceptance from a school she was WL'ed at and wants to take it. Can she still do this? Any repercussions from the school she CTE'd at?

This is the first time any of us has been through this.
She certainly can accept the offer.
I can't see how her CTE school could harm her.
Angry emails, probably.

Curious - have there been many examples of this "poaching" occurring? My understanding is that the school that had her on the waitlist was able to see if she was CTE'd, so I thought that this was probably a conscious decision?

I want to see how AAMC thinks these traffic rules changed the situation much other than adding more confusion if the traffic rules have zero teeth like this.

Would it be ill-advised to commit to enroll at a school without releasing one’s waitlist spot at their top choice?

Yes, this is happening. When there are no rules, all bets are off. The CTE school doesn't know which school poached her. Even if they did what would they say? Their "understanding" is with the student, not other schools.

Welcome to the DO world! Out state MD school always poaches from us!

These rules were changed solely in response to Federal DOE position on anti-competitive behavior by colleges and schools. AAMC was fearful that it could be targeted as controlling or colluding with medical schools on acceptance dates (ie the April 30 deadline), thus forcing students to make choices prior to costs (ie financial aid) available. The new "choose your school" is designed to have schools make the deadlines and requirements (such as requiring use of the tool), thus taking AAMC out of the rule making and perceived anti-competitive behavior

As for how schools may find out about not removing from WL when CTE, until this year schools intending to take a student off WL were required to contact the previous acceptance school prior to advising the student. That is still happening across a fraction of schools. While it would seem highly unlikely to have any impact, I have been contacted by at least one acceptee who appears to have had his acceptance rescinded because of this situation. The acceptee was CTE at a school that required no WL being held but student was holding one. A call from the WL school asked if the student was still interested in attending. A day or two later, his acceptance was rescinded from CTE and no acceptance came from WL. When calling WL the student got no info other than no longer on WL.

As I have said throughout this cycle, dont screw around with CTE

Once you CTE at a school, can the WL school see the name of the CTE school and when you CTE'd there?

From what I've read, yes. The WL school knows what school you CTE'd at, but the reverse is not true (the CTE school does not know what schools you still hold a WL spot for).

We can see whether you've CTE'd at another school, though will not know which one.

Omg these conflicting messages 😕 what's the right answer??

Wait, if this is true (that the WL school doesn't know who the CTE school is), then is the situation @gonnif mentioned possible - where a WL school contacts a CTE school?

I'm not an adcom - trust Moko on this answer. I made an assumption based on what gonnif posted and what I've read in the past.

That's what I don't get either...how is what @gonnif said possible? Only if the WL school knows the name of CTE school can they contact them...

Honestly, I make mistakes too and am far from infallible 🙂. My suspicion is that the school where an applicant CTE'd at found out that the applicant was still on another school's waitlist, and then rescinded the acceptance based on that.

@gyngyn was saying this is not possible? for a CTE school to find out that an applicant is on another WL?

I don't think the WL school can see the name of the school you CTE'd at until October
Yes, this is what I've been told as well by my admissions director. By then it's mostly to help refine our acceptance/waitlist strategies for this current cycle.

Of course, I would never disagree with the information from AAMC itself, even if I heard something different from my colleagues

Bottom line is that applicants need to respect each school's rules when dealing with CTE, unless they are willing to risk their acceptances, potentially become a reapplicant, and need to explain to schools why they had the reapply (I doubt it would be received well)..

That is correct.
The AAMC tells us how many CTE applicants are holding WL's but not who they are!
