Hello I am a senior studying Exercise Physiology and I was wondering how schools view Cumulative GPA. I started at a community college and transferred after 2 years with a 2.8 GPA. But since attending my 4 year university my GPA reset and I now hold a 3.5 GPA. Do PT schools take into account my CC GPA? Or do they only use my 4 year institute as the "Cumulative GPA?"

Every college level class that you have ever taken will be averaged in together to get your cumulative GPA. This may include classes you took at other schools besides your main 2 schools, or classes you have taken since graduating. Also, it's important to note that even if you failed a class and your school didn't count that fail for some reason, PTCAS will.....again, it's every (graded) class you've taken from any school. Do the math now so you know your cumulative GPA...it will help you know where to apply and what your chances are.

Well thats not good news for me... I guess for some reason I thought it was my cumulative GPA of the institution I graduated from and the Pre-req GPA is the pre-req's that particular University requires for admission. Do schools only look at the GPA that PTCAS provides or does each institution have their own way of calculating GPA?

Each school can choose to calculate in their own way, but that completely depends on where you apply. All 5 of my schools that I applied to used the exact PTCAS numbers. Check out each of your schools admissions sites and look for the GPA section. If they don't mention anything special, then assume every class goes into your average and cumulative GPA.

So I know that all schools are different but if most places require a GPA of 3.0 to apply and I have say a 3.1 GPA by PTCAS standards, would they at least see that my past 3 years of school I have got my act together and hold a 3.5 GPA? or will they toss my application to the side immediately?

some look at past 60 hours, it really is circumstantial for each school

It depends on the school. Generally, a 3.1 is pretty low for most schools but it's not impossible to get in some places with that (I did!). If you have an uber high pre-req GPA but a low cumulative for example, that makes you a stronger candidate. Make your list of targeted schools early and then make it your business to get every bit of admissions info you can get. Check their website, search this forum, check PTCAS school directory, talk to an admissions person at the school....

But, that said, MANY schools make an initial "cut" based solely on GPA and GRE when applications come in. Each school gets hundreds to thousands of applicants, so they have to cut the pile somehow before they really start reviewing apps. It varies by school, but pretty common.
