Interview season is about to be in full swing. As I am sure, many of you are starting to prepare for your interview invites. What current events should I brush up/ which ones do you foresee as being asked in an interview?

I feel as though I am not as informed as I should be on a majority of issues, so any direction would be absolutely wonderful 🙂

I'm a big fan of Al Jazeera. Go to their english website, look through front page headlines, maybe through the tech/science pages. Read what interests you, there's no reason to force feed yourself information you really dont care about, youll just forget it. Most of the questions I received in my interviews about current events were topics I may have covered in my classes (personal genomic, infectious diseases, etc). I'd say the worst question I got was "Whats a problem our world has today?" followed by "How do we solve that problem".... I wouldn't have been applying to med school if I knew how to solve World problems now would i?

Let's see...how about the Israeli/Gaza war; the conflicts in Ukraine, Iraq and Syria, the mass mayhem caused by Boko Haram, and the Ebola epidemic in Liberia/Ghana?

Thank you so much Goro! I have a lot of news articles to I need to start digesting haha

If anyone else has any other topics I should look into letme know please!

For scientific current events, I follow IFLS. Although it's mostly sensationalism, it still has a nice summary of what's going on and they still cite scientific journals, like Nature, so you can read those instead. It's a nice way to stay on top of what's new in science. Just don't read the comments lol.

If you are worried about current events I recommend either subscribing to the economist magazine

or reading the debatabase book which covers both sides concisely of a lot of current event type ethical/debate issues

Its really helpful for getting up to date with current events and ethical issues

A combination of Wall Street Journal and The Economist is excellent to be informed and updated about current events, especially in regards to healthcare

also atul gawande books

Judging by OP's status, it looks like everything worked out pretty well... last year.

Side note: Current events have not been brought up in any of my interviews. Then again, I haven't had very many.

-ISIS
-Gun control
-Black lives matter
-Obamacare

Those should prepare you for 98% of current events topics. 👍
