Current/past residents ever been "waitlisted" then actually got an onsite?

So I keep seeing this "waitlisted" thing pop up a lot in forums and Reddit with applicants neither receiving interviews or rejections from programs that have sent out both. Any current or past residents that have actually had this happen then actually received an onsite or is that few and far between?
