Hi. I have been offered acceptance to UIW for this fall. I'm just wondering if some current UIW students would comment on this thread or PM me on what they think of the school.

And please everyone, do not turn this into a thread bashing the new colleges of optometry.

DOWN WITH THE NEW COLLEGES OF OPTOMETRY! ()

Yeah, I was actually really impressed with AZCOPTs program. And in conjunction with the area it's in...if it was like 8 years from now I'd pick AZCOPT over SCO. Unfortunately it's so new that I can't like...y'know, pour my money into an institution I'm not sure about. BUT the point is that I was extremely impressed with them.

Sorry, don't know anything about UIW. 😛

Thats okay. Any input is appreciated.

I realize I forgot to say why I liked it. Maybe you can see parallels in UIW. I really liked azcopt because everything was brand new and up to date. They make it a point to train you on many different brands of machinery so that when it comes to boards or future jobs, you hopefully have some familiarity with the equipment you have to use. I think from hearing feedback from past OD students, they know that we want as much clinic time as possible. They teach you clinic skills like refracting the VERY first quarter. The clinic itself has not been completed yet, but they said they're going to try to incorporate 2nd year participation when it does. It's almost as if the schools knew they would have to overcome a LOT of adversity and they had to really make their school/program appetizing because otherwise no one would want to go there. So as far as I can tell, the program is VERY forward thinking and is very much geared towards readying its students to be good clinicians. They also offer Spanish language classes because of the large Mexican community, which is something I wish more schools offered. Also, small class size of 50, so very close knit and good teacher:student ratios. I don't know anything about UIW, but maybe these points are things you could research about the school and decide if it's important to you.

Agreed. A few of us were just talking about this the other day, we don't get a whole lot of Hispanic patients in our clinic but dang, when they come in, we all wish we'd had something to help us out. Luckily there are enough students here who speak Spanish to help us out, but I totally think more schools should offer this. It's a great idea.

So UIW does this? Or are you talking about AZCOPT? Sorry I'm a little confused.

AZCOPT does it, but UIW is in Texas...is there not a strong Spanish-Speaking population there? You should check their curriculum. Logic points to "should" but reality may be different.

Yea, logically it makes perfect sense. But I didn't see anything in their curriculum about it and they didn't mention it at the interview. It would be nice if they did. Thanks Mewcakes. That name makes me laugh by the way lol.

my avatar makes me laugh. 😛 I need to own that kitten.

I also will be starting at UIW this fall. I haven't had a chance to meet any of their current students. Are there any members on here that currently attend UIW?

Very few current students from each school frequent this site. It is always the same folks.

You can send me a PM if you want to ask any questions.

Sadly, we (current UIW students) all were thinking the same thing about u guys. We have no idea how many of you are entering next year or anything like that. I would like to know so I can estimate how much money I will earn tutoring u all . Seriously, tho, we are totally in the dark about the new class. Look most of us up on facebook. Search uiwso class of 2013 or uiw c/o 2013.

Thanks for the post. I have tried to look up that fb group but you have to request to join. I have joined the c/o 2014 group but not c/o 2013.

Hi, phoropterguy, I belong to class of 2014. thank u 4 nice welcome n tutoring, lol..so need word of advise from u. 1) hw r professors n dean? meanin friendly, hw much they teach in class, & hw available they r? since they actually never meet incomin class till very day of orientation, it's almost hard 2 c what i m gettin myself into. 2) hw's courseload? u think it's doable? nw to make that que simpler- mostly all other colleges r teachin tones of other stuff than only optometry while UIW is diff. 3) do professors ever give notes? or u study from books only? 4) I saw clinic on campus, i must say that it's ok. eventhough it has state-of-art equipments, it wasn't all da way latest. but i guess, it shouldn't b much bigger issue. wot u say?

please, please guide me through. I'l really appreciate yr help n guidance. if u wanna just email me, email to [email protected]

Actually, from what I understand UIW offers an optional certificate in Spanish. It's not mandatory (hence the word optional). I'm still a little in the dark on the courses I'll be taking, but I'm going to be calling them this week and trying to find out more information. I know your right about the business managment courses, I asked UIW during my interview. I don't know much about AZCOPT, nothing against them (they likely have a very good program), I just haven't done much research on them. But UIW has two clinics, one in east SA and another near the medical center. I'm confident I'll get exposure to some clinically interesting cases and get some quality patient care experience. To answer your question, I am attending UIW for the c/o 2014.

By the way, if you don't mind could you spell out all the words your trying to write completely please. I had some trouble understanding your post. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Best of luck to you!

@ Don'tlike physics...
