CVS or Riteaid

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That is a dangling carrot that a position is opening up at Riteaid. The job you would be taking is per diem basically so you never know if you can pay your bills or not. Not great if starting a family or buying a house. Per diem wage should be significantly higher than hourly but the offer does not show that. Plus if no guaranteed hours then no benefits, do not forget that. I would say search high and low for a VA job. They treat pharmacists as professionals, great benefits and possible 20 year retirement with pension. Search USA jobs and keep looking and be ready to apply fast.

CVS is the worst of the retail. CostCo is the best- they treat their employees well, no drive thru, adequate help, working not in terrible locations/ neighborhoods. No angry customers in Costco
Retail hierchy:

Costco> Sam’s club>Publix > Pill pack/Amazon> Independent>Target/ CVS>Kroger=Winn Dixie=Safeway=Albertsons> Walmart>RiteAid>Walgreens=CVS

As a CVS/Target pharmacist I can tell you it is now no better than the stand alone stores. I am filing 160 rx a day with help only 10-2. We are open 9-7. The working conditions are horrendous. Just when you think they can’t cut more they do. Try being alone with five pharmacy calls, a shingles shot, two drop offs and five people waiting to pick up.

Have you worked in a standalone CVS before? What you described sounds like an average day at one. Target has no drive thru so it's automatically better. Plus you have a bathroom right outside your pharmacy.

I dont work for CVS/Target but I do fill scripts there. The service is solid and I usually see 2 techs whenever I am there!

I am not saying it is easy but they probably expect a pharmacist to do 80-100 scripts without help in 8-10 hours these days. So ya, I can see them adding few tech hours to push 160. The thing that pushes over the top are the MTM and other peripherals that are part of the package.

I don't think people should mention 5 phone call part... We all know CVS doesn't care if you pick up that phone.

They asked for it.... Now much of the real talent has left retail.

This statement made me chuckle. To the big chains, there IS NO SUCH THING as talent. We are all the same. Warm bodies to fill a schedule. Born to be abused and discarded. Some sooner than later. Talent? LOL

160 with four hours of help? Wow I think I am pretty good and I am fairly certain I could not handle that.

People always like to use the 1 90d rx = 30d rx figure to exaggerate the numbers

There are stores that sell 1100 a week actual Rx but their "30-day equivalent" is ~1800 a week because they have a lot of 90-day Rx. Guess which # people use to tout their workload

However 160/d is doable (once in a while...) but you prob have to crank a lot of those out in the AM at a normal store (lots of pick up in the evening) or in the evening at a geezer store (lots of pickup in the earlier hours)

I don't think Publix is better than independent--probably not Pill pack either.

Costco likes pharmacies bc a lot of the time pts will have to come back another day and do additional shopping and/or have long wait times. I don't see them closing either. One of the few places that I see actually put their drug prices online.

Also, being closed on Sundays is great for a better quality of life. If I had the choice to start my career again, I'd do costco

Or if you open your own independent, you can close on Saturdays AND Sundays like I do 🙂.

The demand for CVS pharmacists seems to be the highest, which I see as a function of their size but moreso their turnover. Although many probably agree on what they wished happened to them, I see them as least likely to go out of business/sell their files/ get taken over by someone else. If you’re extremely risk adverse and/or could not handle a significant unplanned career change, some value this. The conditions are no secret, but some value things being unwavering to expectations, however low they may be.

On the flip side, due to this high demand they can be viewed as the “safety school.” Also at the rate things are going, it’s a real possibility your company gets bought by the evil empire and you become a cvs employee.

security in hours and benefits can be extremely valuable depending on your personal scenario. A 2 hour commute may suck but only getting 20 hrs and having to figure out healthcare benefits on your own for you and possibly multiple dependents and pay loans and a house etc... can also suck.

welcome to post-grad life! You’ll quickly learn most jobs suck. It’s about finding the balance of sucks least for you vs. upsides it creates for your life beyond work.

I'd say based on what I see from independents,, more than half of them are open half day on Saturday. I think it just gives pts a peace of mind.

Yes. automatically better? My flu goal is 4 fold the cvs right next to me. 800 vs 3400. Not an argument as to which is better. It’s a different beast. My pic has made it so we have very needy people and has told people we will fax on c2 every month for people ‍♀️

Or faxing for c2 or the flu goal that averages to 55 shots a day.
