anyone out there practicing cyto without boards?? have been offered a deal i don't really want to refuse reading cases half a day a week. i think i had a pretty good grasp of it all when i was a resident and with a bit of a self induced crash course was thinking i might just go for it..

I know people that are signing out cyto and heme without boards.

Depends on your confidence and who will back you if you F-up.

with heme you have flow, ihc, etc to back you up....this can be helpful

cyto can be a little more challenging....tissue block can help if available.

what type of cyto... all paps... FNA's.. what type of FNA's?

there are very good diagnostic pathologists that are not cyto boarded and amazing at signing out....

there are lots of boarded cytopathologists that are not very confident and do not give clinicians any more information than they had before the FNA or whatever... you know atypical this and atypical that...

Most of this will be based on what you will be signing out...
    If you have any backup...
    Your level of confidence...
How much the clinicians respect the path people in your group...

I thought you were a strict AP/DP dude... what gives?

I once saw heard a junior private practice pathologist say that he thought a pancreatic CT core biopsy was "suspicious". The old time pathologist said "of course it is suspicious. if it wasn't suspicious they wouldn't have biopsied it". I thought that was pretty funny.

Im confused. Practicing cyto without cyto boards or without any boards?

everyone does cyto, not every has cyto boards, thus:
95% pathologists read cyto, 5% pathologists have cyto boards
QED tons of people practice cyto without cyto boards.
