Just like the title says, got a D in anatomy. I don't really have a good excuse other than thinking I could survive with taking biochem and anatomy at the same time. I'm going to start the spring semester of my junior year, and my gpa suffered from this drop. It is now 3.42 after dropping from a 3.6. The thing is, I had a strong upward trend from freshman year, and then I go and get this ****ty grade. I am gonna re-take it for sure. I haven't taken my mcat yet as I'm planning on applying after my senior year ends.

Anyone else pull through with my similar situation? How do med schools look at re-takes?

Thanks

I'm really interested in physiology, but to take it, Anatomy is a requirement.

If this D is the only bad grade you've gotten recently (and by bad I mean anything below a B) then you might still be okay. If you retake with a lighter courseload and get a better grade you'll at least demonstrate that you learned the material and that perhaps your poor grade was due to poor scheduling.

EDIT: If anatomy was difficult for you, physiology will be worse because you actually have to apply what you've learned. Anatomy is pure memorization.

Yeah I've been on a strong upward trend with 4.0 all through sophomore year. But this semester the D just killed me.

As for physiology, what you say makes sense. Maybe I should put off physiology till senior year after I retake anatomy.

Ok. Retake the anatomy class and try to get an A (although it can be difficult). Initially, I was suggesting to forget that grade and move on, since the class will still be difficult and getting an A won't be easy, but as long as you can handle it, you're good to go. But make sure to forget your D before proceeding (to avoid the distractions).

For MD schools, retakes are averaged with your initial grade (so D + A = B-). All grades count for MDs. DO schools have a grade replacement policy, so your D gets dropped and replaced by an A.

Why take anatomy?

I'm doing anatomy and biochem next semester... and P-chem wish me luck 😳

Harsh man. Are they required?

😕 Why would physiology be worse than anatomy? You're right that anatomy's pure memorization, but physiology allows you to understand the concepts better and doesn't require much anatomy. works for me at least.

If you want anecdotal evidence, I just got accepted with a D+ in the second quarter of o-chem. Granted, I had no C's and a pretty good story (lots of work and 24 unit quarters). Even with a ton of units, it dropped my GPA about a point. Moral of the story: one bad grade won't keep you from getting into med school--just use it as motivation to work hard and earn as many A's as possible.

FALSE!

I found Anatomy to be incredibly tedious, boring, and obnoxious. The only memorable elements were just fundamental Physiology disguised as "Anatomy" (Horner's Syndrome, anyone?).

Physiology is all about concepts. Sure there are details but the details are supported by conceptual ideas and stem from those concepts. In other words, Phys is about understanding, whereas Anatomy is nothing but tedious memorization.

IMO, Physiology >>>>>>>> Anatomy. I wouldn't say you need an excellent knowledge of Anatomy to do well in Physiology.

I know nothing about Med school Anatomy or Phys, but undergrad A&P produced similar opinions. Nothing about learning about insertions of 100 muscles or the 12 cranial nerves innervations or the millions of bone markings was interesting. However learning about the physiology was fun. Likewise I also found histology to be fun though.

I would retake it and get an A though. Some adcoms might see this as a major red flag for medical school anatomy.

Fair enough; what I said was mostly from personal experience and the experience of other classmates. Maybe we're all just boring automatons 🙁

And OP, technically you don't HAVE to wait until you take anatomy again (one is usually not the pre-req of another, at least at my institution). You know the courses at your school best...ask around and see what others have to say.

Really? Did you retake it or did you apply with only the D+?
