Looks like I might be headed for a D in Ochem....The class is out of 1000 pts. Average is curved up to a C+

I got 52/200 on first midterm, avg was 82, standard deviation of 32

I got 55/200 on 2nd midterm, avg was 107, sd was 35 pts

i got 600 pts remaining. i dont think i can do this. even if i do pull off a C-, my sGPA will be like....a 2.4

🙁 just try your best - ochem was my worst subject as well. Just try your hardest...I got C's in both my orgos and I still interviewed at BU last weekend. Don't let it get to you - just focus on doing well.

Do your damdest from here on in. I got C's in orgo because my proff was a POS and my highest score on the DAT was in orgo. Good luck, work up that sGPA

don't give up. if you can't pull it up to a C, i say drop it and take a W.

I would take the W. If you can't though, you still have a chance and don't give in because of one class. maybe consider retaking it even if you get a C. That's if you have the time to fit it in your schedule before you apply to dental school

I agree with withdrawing from the course and having a simple W. Although I think it maybe to late do that, check with the registrar and the professor.

The professor has to sign on the W, it rarely is acceptable at my school unless you come in with a broken leg or something. I don't know how you guys were able to do it (without a decent reason).

At my school, it's encouraged. I'm in Organic II right now and my teacher said, "The average is about a 50. If you failed the first 3 tests, You SHOULD withdraw because I will NOT curve." Just like that.

Our third midterm is in 3 wks. The deadline to drop with a W is Dec. 1 which is AFTER the third midterm.

But really, I mean, I already have 4 C's (from last yr and this) and I'm only a Sophmore at Fall08

University of California @ San Diego.

I LOVE UCSD! I got 2.1 Science outta there. 5 years worth of engineering too

Yeah but...should I not apply junior year and apply senior year? I mean....even if I get a C-, that C- won't be accepted in a lot of places...If I pull off a C, ill be giggling.

But should i take the W after my 3rd midterm? ugh, im mad. i wanna go to a cali school like western u, usc, ucla, llu, or ucsf or uop

you should make sure if that W is a WP or a WF. That would make some differences since withdrawing while passing sounds whole lot better than a big fat F.

I didn't even know they had "wf and wp". Really...? Wow.

And I hope things work themselves out, I'd rather have a W than a D.

:[

On our transcript, a W is a just a W. It doesn't factor into our GPA whatsoever.

But I've done the calculations and I need to do about 20-30 points better than the average on both the midterm and final to get a C. Help me out here if I'm wrong.

a sgpa of 2.4 even with a C-.. My advice coming from poor early grades.... Buckle down now.. and withdraw from that class then retake and get an A. When you are in a numbers race, with poor numbers you wont even get the interview in order to explain why.... Sorry. Good luck!

Same at my school. I don't know why a UC would have such a lax policy on withdrawals. Seems it can be used to inflate a gpa.

I went to UCSD first so I thought it was the norm, but you have a 10 week quarter, you can drop within the first 4 weeks for no W, and up to the 8th week to get a W. Anything after that is an F.

Now at CSULA you have 1.5 weeks to drop before a W. I don't even know when an F will occur but I'm no longer living that kind of lifestyle.

You can't really inflate your GPA this way, schools are gonna wonder why you have 32 units in 4 years of schooling and a transcript full of Ws. That won't look any better thats for sure.

So you guys suggest taking the third midterm...and if it goes well, then keep staying in the class...and if not, then drop?

Its not getting a W, its the ease that you guys are allowed to get it. Our school requires some medical reason/major personal reason to get a W...whereas from what I see in this thread, withdrawing due to poor academic performance is acceptable acceptable at your school.

We can discuss the UCSD policy somewhere else; this topic wasn't created to ask whether or not the policy is fair. I just want to know if I'm gonna get ****ed by the big dick of ochem and whether or not I should drop.

if you have the option to drop anytime before the final, go ahead and study your ballz off and take the midterm. If there's a drop deadline before the midterm, drop it now. W can be overlooked, not the end of the world.

Best of luck.

Like TeamGuo said, go take the midterm and see. Maybe bring in your study notes and stuff and go talk to your professor. At my school if you do really well on the final in ochem you can bring up your grade a lot because ochem is a course where everything builds on itself. They always tell us what we get on the final will usually be our grade. So go talk to your professor, tell him/her you're having a hard time... If you're willing to pay for it, try looking for a tutor.

I got a C in organic 1, D in organic 2 (retook and got an A) and managed to get into a couple schools during a tough application cycle. So, it can be done for sure.

However, your science GPA of 2.4 if awfully low. Even with my D averaged in my science GPA was close to a 3.5 at graduation.

You really need to step it up if you want to get into dental school. Harsh, but true.

Reason it's so low is because of the following:

math 1,2 = C
chem 3 = C+
chemlab = C
chem 1,2 = B

but if u include ALLLL scieences then its somewhere around a 3.00 cuz i took two classes at CC for A's (health and nutiriton) and im taking 1 easy science class now.

so it'd be higher

similar to hupholland i got a C in ochemI then a D in ochemII and decided to only retake ochemII and got an A. i retook ochem II with the same prof and he ended up writing me an LOR based on my improvement.

so i would suggest withdrawing and retaking.

I have heard from a couple of dentists, some got c's, d's and one even failed it the first time (retook it and got a c). Granted this was a VERY long time ago, they were still able to get into school. I'm sure things are more competitive now and that may not be the case?!😕

When you're up against people with 4.09 GPAs then yes, it gets more competitive

I dropped it 🙂

I shall retake it next quarter with a brandnew professor...He's never taught the course before so he should be rather easy.

It's an incredible sigh of relief. I just need to get my act together and pull off a >B next quarter.

Um...I don't recommend taking a professor who is new for the very reason that THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TEACHING YET. It seems like a smart idea at first, but it might backfire on you, becuase your NEW professor probably will rely on teaching straight from the book instead of giving you specific and test-related notes. ...Just saying....

Now you know what to expect. Study hard, and do all the readings and the problems. Believe it or not, the questions that you get wrong are the ones that you will learn the most from. who you take the course with is also very important. My organic I professor was sent strait from hell to torture us. look him up online lol he looks like the guy from back to the future. Dr. Baker, he has a part of Antarctica named after him lol. But get this only 2 tests the whole semester. Each test is on 6 chapters. The average on the first was a 40, the second one was a 38. Now here is where the real catch is, only 10% of the class can get A's. Therefore if you have 100 students and 10 get 96 avg. and u get a 95, guess what? yup, you have a B. I can swear to u this man was sent right from hell.

Yeah well, I'll try my absolute hardest to get an A 😀👍
