Hi all,
I'm a third year osteopathic med student and have decided to apply for psychiatry residencies in the fall. From what I've found from my research, I really like the psych program at NYU. I know the program's very competitive and there's no current DO residents from what I've found. Anyone ever heard of any DO residents in the past or DO's who have tried rotating and/or applying to the program? Or is NYU basically out of the question for any osteopath?

Thanks for the input.

Never let anyone on SDN tell you anything is out of the question. NEVER. People on SDN spout off about stuff they know nothing about. A DO student just matched integrated plastics at an allo program. What do you think people would have said if he'd come here and said he was foregoing the DO match and trying his luck in the MD match for plastics?

Apply to NYU (along with other programs) and see what happens. Try to do a sub-I there if you can.

Doesnt hurt to try.

Do 1 month there, get to know everyone, face time with PD, important faculty, etc.
Also, not bad idea to call and ask, either.
Take USMLE Steps 1 and 2.

Even if you dont match there, you'll match somewhere I imagine.

I'm not sure why; you seem perfectly sane.

You should e-mail NYU's psychiatry educational coordinator yourself about rotations and see what they say. Also, why don't you post this in the resident forum? You might have better input there.

Additional detail: NYU's director of medical education came up to us (Touro-NY) and talked about all the stuff they offer as far as electives go and who to contact for everything. I didn't write down anything about the psych rotation (nor do I remember anything specific about it) but the guy said NYU has a general stance that 1) they really like DO applicants and 2) despite 1, they do not accept the COMLEX, so take your USMLE step 1 and 2CK.

he also added USMLE step 2CS is usually not neccessary and COMLEX level 2PE will be fine but thats a program-by-program thing within the NYU hospitals.
