I'm wondering if anyone has any information if D.O.s are competitive for endocrine fellowships? How realistic is it to expect that I can finish my D.O. and then successfully gain admission to an endo fellowship?

pretty silly question....DO's are competitive in all fellowships. It's all about you and what your credentials are.

One other thing. I assume that you are going to do a residency in either internal medicine or peds before you apply for fellowship. That choice will also be important in determining how competitive you are.

I'm also considering getting a D.O. rather than an M.D. and I'm really interested in endocrinology, so I'm trying to figure a few things out:

1) Which residencies will make me more competitive for an endocrinology fellowship? Is IM or Peds better? Personally, I'm more interested in adults than kids, but I'd still rather know if people who do a peds residency will be more competitive.

2) What other factors/credentials will make me competitive for the endocrinology fellowship?

3) What will I need to do to be competitive for residencies that will eventually help me get an endocrinology fellowship? In other words, what do I need to be worried about doing in med school?

All I can really think of is research in the specialty during med school and residency, making connections, class rank, USMLE/COMPLEX scores, good letters of recommenation, and getting some sort of allopathic residency. Any advice/feedback?

I know that it seems "too early" to be thinking about this kind of thing, but I read that only 60% of osteopathic applicants to specialized internal medicine fellowships get spots, whereas 84% of total US applicants do. That's a significant difference, and I'm trying to figure out how hard it will be to to make sure I'm in that 60%.

(I'm not sure whether "osteopathic" just referred to applicants with an osteopathic residency or to all applicants with a DO rather than an MD.)

Here's where I read it: http://www.nrmp.org/fellow/match_name/msmp/stats.html
