Good morning all,

As I was doing some research on these boards about Osteopathic applications, I came across previous D.O. matchlists. I saw on these spreadsheets that either D.O. or M.D. or both were checked off. Can someone please explain this to me? In the case that M.D. was checked off, does that just mean that the student took the USMLE's and got into an allopathic residency? I know this question sounds a little dumb, but I would appreciate some clarity. Thank you so much and have a good one everyone!

That is what it means. They didn't necessarily have to take the USMLE, however. Some (maybe more) allopathic residencies will consider the COMLEX for residency applicants as well.

Do is for an osteo residency. MD is for the allo residency. If both are checked, the residency is dually accredited, meaning you can take either the AOA boards or the ACGME boards when you finish (or both even).

You don't necessarily have to take USMLE exams to get into an ACGME residency. More and more residency programs are accepting the COMLEX. However, many DO students do take the USMLEs to make it easier for the ACGME program directors to objectively measure their applications against allo students who only take USMLE exams.
