Out of curiosity, what do you think played into not getting an acceptance at VCOM? Your scores seem really competitive for them

Applied (completed secondary) at 5 DO
Interviewed at 3, all mid-late spring
Alternate list at 2
Accepted at 1

GPA ~ 3.75, also have Master's (similar GPA)
MCAT: first try 25, second try 29
2013-2014 cycle

where will you be attending?
I'd rather not share that for the sake of privacy.

I can say that I'm stoked that I got in anywhere. Glad I went ahead and applied 😀

-Submitted 4 secondaries to NYCOM, PCOM, LECOM-Seton Hill, and Rowan
-Received interviews at LECOM-SH and NYCOM
-Accepted outright at NYCOM, wait-listed then accepted at LECOM-SH
-Attending NYCOM this fall

Saw this thread and went through old emails- just saw this morning Touro-NY emailed me asking to do a secondary but I didn't do it, thankfully that didn't hurt me!

Stats- best MCAT was 28, cGPA 3.6 sGPA 3.4-3.5

What would you say you had going for you? The mcat really shouldve held you back but you got a lot of II's and 5 acceptances which is unexpected imo

First application, applied to five schools, 2 interviews, 2 waitlists. Second application, applied to 2 schools, accepted to both.

It's a crap shoot. I wouldn't judge your chances based on other people's experiences. Apply as broadly as you can and do your best. If you get an interview, there is a very good chance you will be accepted.

Accepted @ PCOM so withdrew from NYCOM interview.

Anybody who got interviews and acceptance, Can you tell me how many schools did you apply to, interviews received, acceptance and stats?

Applied to 17 school (Late in October of 2013), secondary turned in for 16 schools.
Interview invite for 4 schools.
Attended 3 interviews
Accepted 2 schools, rejected for one because I have been out of school for 9 years +.

II's: 15
Attended: 3

wow that is a TON of ii's. what was your science GPA and EC's?

your numbers were right at the average for matriculants. I can't help but wonder why for MD, if you are right at the average (3.7/31-32), even with solid EC's it would take a miracle to get ii's from 15/23 schools. even if you carefully select your schools. (yet for DO this seems fairly common)

Firstly, I think my sGPA got me some attention. I had only A's and A-'s for my sGPA (with a bio degree... i.e. pain in my butt to avoid those B's). Also a very strong upward trend from a 3.1 at the end of freshman year, to a 3.6 at the end of senior year.
Secondly, I had a unique internship experience that dealt directly with underserved populations that I milked for everything it was worth. I also had over 300 hours shadowing various specialties as well as work in academia including physics and genetics.
I believe that is what got me in the door.
Lastly, being personable and easy going really helped me in interviews. I was able to find things in common with all of my interviewers. I would walk in and meet the person, ask them about their day and chat with them for a while, crack a joke when appropriate, and be genuinely interested in them as a person not just as an interviewer. I'm confident that this was what got my vote at most of the schools. The only school I didn't get accepted at was a school I did not like at all which the interviewers saw right through.

what year was this? I guess u get a 9 9 on BS and PS? ur EC must be spectacular!
2014. My ECs were very good for DO schools. If you can do a lot involving PC, you will get looks with my stats. (See above response to csx)

Really digging the profile icon! One of my favorite bands!
Same here buddy.
Count your money and I'll count my friends... 😀

We'll see who's richer in the end. 😉

I actually got to open for these guys in Anaheim!

Right on! That's freaking sweet. What band? (of course you don't have to share for the sake of anonymity.) I've seen them several times and at the end of every show my voice is shot ^.^
Unconditional is a bit different from their usual stuff but I do like it

8 secondaries competed (western, azcom, rvu, soma, kcom, kcumb, nsu, dmu)
5 ii's (soma, kcom, kcumb, nsu, dmu)
Attended 4, all but dmu.
Accepted at all 4.

3.3 gpa 28mcat😀

my sGPA was around 3.3......i got all A's in bio, chem, physics and 2 C's in orgo. My ec's were your basic pre-med. Overseas trip, some shadowing, some volunteering. But i didn't save any lives or anything. I think the trick is just super broad and super early.

applied 11, ii's at 6, interviews at 6, 3 acceptances. 3.3-3.4 GPA, 3.1-3.2 sGPA, and 30 MCAT.

Weird I didn't see this! But I played for authors of the forgotten and eyes like the sea. Anonymity not necessary since they weren't HUGE bands 😉

I really liked challenger but I love the backstory to the creation of unconditional. Still def a fan of "the sinner"!

What's another band you're a fan of?

Wow! Even though that seems verrry expensive, all that matters is that acceptance at the end!

Last year I applied to 29, finished secondaries for ~15, got 2 interviews, 1 acceptance and 1 waitlist with 3.3 cGPA/3.1 sGPA and 30 MCAT

So study hard, apply broadly, and learn to love writing bull**** essays.

Might explain why you only got 2 interviews

I had a ton of willpower back in the day. I could skillfully craft all manner of make-believe reasons for why this school or that school was such a great fit for me or vice versa. God I was a good bull****ter. I hadn't even *heard* of most of these places before checking those boxes on AACOMAS, let alone visited or attended them. It was tedious and it did take a lot out of me.

Yeah, sounds almost as bad as learning to drink your own piss. [relevant username]

Wonder why you only got 2 interviews with that MCAT. Did you apply late? Have any red flags? Downward trend?

I asked around and 3.1 sGPA just sucks, apparently

I even had an upward trend, if that tells you anything

Applied to 3 (VCOM, LMU, and Pikeville)

Interview invite to all 3, but only attended interviews at VCOM & LMU

Accepted at both

3.85/26

if possible, can you please share your EC?
Thanks,

All 3 of those schools have bias toward Appalachian applicants who want to practice in rural, underserved areas of the region. And I've lived in rural Appalachia all of my life and I want to come back here to practice. So, I don't want to sound arrogant, but I was confident I would get into at least one of the three schools based on being a great fit, my GPA, and I have top notch ECs and LORs. I'm not URM. Plus, I applied to 8 MD schools as well.

Honestly, I probably couldn't have afforded to apply to more schools even if I had wanted to. But thankfully, I had the 2 DO acceptances and 1 MD acceptance.
