Hey everyone.
I was looking at the admittance rate for many of the schools and realized an
extremely low acceptance rate for all schools. That being said, are those
who are rejected initially before the interview have GPA's and DAT not suitable
to the median? (It sounds like a dumb question), but it seems highly unlikely,
lets say for example d-school X has 3000 applicants for 500 interviews, is it that
the 2500 who did not get an interview have GPA and DAT far below the minimum? It seems as if there are a lot of people with good stats.

I guess what I'm asking is are students with decent stats. getting rejected from d-schools? or are they mostly applicants with low gpa/dats?
THx

So when a dental school puts together a class, they are not just looking at GPA and DAT scores. Why? Because if they put together a full class of 4.0 students with 25+ DATs then it'd be a class full of over competitive people all after the #1 spot to get into a OMFS/ortho/etc residency. As crazy as it sounds, they're also looking for those that want to become quality general practice dentists. Maybe someone that doesn't have a great GPA, but someone who will succeed in the dental education and will become a good dentist.

Who knows HOW they pick the people that they do. That's why it's suggested that you apply to as many schools that you feel comfortable applying to. I applied to 16 this year and ended up getting into 4. My GPA and DAT were very average and although it was expensive to apply to that many schools, it was great to have my selection between those schools instead of 'well I guess I go there because I got in there'.

I agree... Who knows how they decide. I called one of the schools yesterday that I interviewed at, but did not get into, to ask what to improve on for next year. They told me nothing and everything in my application is good. They said just apply early again next year because 3000 applicants are fighting for 40 spots.

this is a very important point you are making here.. As an undergrad I went to a school that also has a dental school so the admissions people would give us presentations and what not for preparation. one of the most important things you can do (aside from getting the best marks possible) is to apply EARLY! if they look at your file before they get to the other 3000 files the chances increase of getting an interview and hence getting in. Apply EARLY; by early I mean within a month of them opening aadsas for new applicants (although within two weeks is better, you want to be in the first mailing if possible) Good Luck
