I'm starting dental school this August.... I'm wondering if any of you have or know someone who has trained for/run a marathon while in school. I just don't know what to expect with workload--will I have the time to do that much running (the race is in Sept) with school?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you!

It's going to be very hard, but with proper motivation and discipline, it can be done. Several of my friends and classmates participated in a marathon last year and all went well. It was more casual training though (3-4 runs per week). If you're looking to be competitive, then it'll be a big test, that's for sure.

everyone blows the "no time for the gym" out of proportion.

I have been able to find 1.5 hours for the gym every day since we started. I highly doubt these people are spending every waking moment studying.

They spend 1.5 hours eating or watching TV. If you are willing to give up TV, you can easily make it to the gym. Its about priorities and time management. You can live a very rich life while in school if you manage your time.

Thank you!

My buddy commutes an hour to school everyday, is married, does well in dental school and still happened to run a sub 3 hour marathon during a busy semester.

It can be done, you just need to prioritize.

Hup

i ran a half last year and had plenty of time to train i think that someday i might run a full but i am just not into that much running right now

This is kinda reassuring. I am going to be at a International Dentist Program in June and am training for a full marathon. Keep wondering if I'll have time to though. And my goal is to just finish the race.

A classmate of mine ran the Chicago marathon last fall and finished in the top 100. This obviously required a LOT of training.

If you manage your time correctly, you will have ample opportunity to enjoy life outside of dentistry.

there are 3 people in my class training for one right now. aside from them, i go to the gym to work out and/or play basketball everyday for at least 1.5 hours. if you don't have time to exercise 1.5 hours (or do something you enjoy for 1.5 hours) a day in dental school.....then you have problems with time management.

It depends on how much YOU need to study. I have a lot of classmates who run a couple marathons a year. I have classmates who couldn't fathom giving that much time to something outside of school... and I have a roommate that does marathons, joined the badminton club at the undergrad, plays on a hockey team, is about to take up cycling and is holding down a 3.9. You just have to figure out what works for you. Manage your time well and you should be able to fit it in.

Thanks for your input everyone... it seems like all one needs is motivation and time management. I don't think that because I'm busy I should be neglect my well being 🙂

I'm signing up! My goal is to finish, so if I can at least do that...I'll be happy.

Good Luck! Same goal here. 😀

Thanks everyone from me also.

So >1 yr later, how'd those marathons go?

Anyone else join the marathon club recently or training to do so?
