For all those who went through the match (1+ times) and/or any PD's that happen by,

Ballpark, how many residencies should the following applicant apply to in order to get 15 interviews (as 10 is no longer the magic #):

-HP in clinicals except for one P because he/she failed the surgical subspecialties exam.

-Extensive volunteer work before med school in two ER's, PICU, NICU, CICU.

-No leadership or volunteer experience in med school.

-The one good thing: board score in 240's w/ three shelf exams in the 85-95 range.

-Said applicant was going to go into FP until last week b/c he/she bought into the "you can do EM in FP" routine.

What can said applicant to do improve things?

Thank you for any input

Board scores are fine, if you get good LORs, and you are anywhere in the top half of your class are higher, you might be able to get by with about 20-25.

I wish they would offer interviews before their deadlines are due, so that if you didn't get enough, you could apply to more before the deadlines. Stupid antiquated ******* rules.

One thing I will add.... apply to TOO MANY programs as it is MUCH easier to turn down/cancel invites than to apply and beg for more in January.

....and make sure you apply to some places 'off the beaten path'. You will not find anyone on here that will voice which programs are low-tier, but competitiveness in EM seems to be very regional based so make sure to apply to some places that you figure all the other people would rather not live, but would/could if they had to.

Good luck and remember that there really are no bad places to train!
