Does anyone know a good place to live near UTSW? I'll be starting a residency there soon and don't know the area at all. I was looking for condos in Oaklawn, but I'm concerned that Love Field may cause a lot of airplane noise. Anybody have any tips?

Living in Oaklawn is not bad. The area around Oaklawn is a little sketchy but getting better. My wife and I live in Houston now but we lived in Dallas for 14 years prior to that and are heading back there for residency. Oaklawn is a very diverse area and not for everybody. My wife and I personally loved it. Lots of great little shops.
As for Love Field being a noise problem, don't worry about that. You are far enough away that it will not bother you too bad.
PM us if you have any specific questions.

This is the website for great apt company that manages small properties in a beautiful neighborhood very close to the med center. I lived in one of their apt during med school, and it was great...

Just don't bring any pink dress shirts (if you are a guy.)

You'll figure out what I mean when you get there.

las colinas is a great area, short commute, houses will be a litte more, but in the university hills subdivision of lascolinas older homes can be had for like 200k. if not a lot of people live in irving near 635/114.

Thank you for the tips. I'm headed out there soon to check it out.

anyone have tips on temporary housing for an externship at UTSW? I'll be out there in October for a month.

I did an away at UTSW last year in Sep/Oct. The department of surgery (Sandra Molina (?)) had a list of people with rooms to rent. I stayed at the house of a drug rep on Mockingbird Ln. It was around 5 miles from White Rock Lake and an average 8-10 min commute to UTSW via I-75. The rent was a little much at $500 but I did have a private entrance and bath, minifridge/microwave combo, and a TV and VCR. I was in a really nice and safe neighborhood that was great for jogging and convenient to lots of shopping. Try to get in touch with your department because I am sure that they have information available of people that will be offering housing during that time. If not contact the Dept. of Surgery as they have a list of 5-10 people with rooms/studios to rent.

I would also check out what is now called 'Uptown'. It is off of mckinney ave and very close to UTSW. Lots of areas, close to all major highways. Lived there for years. Oaklawn has changed significantly over the last 10 years or so. also a great place to live.

Most of the new housing in uptown is extremely expensive (or so I have heard.)

I have friends who live in uptown, right smack in the middle of westvillage, the apts are made so it's easy to room, they pay 700 each,(just two of them), and it's pretty close to utsw, the immediate area around isn't that safe a place so most people try to live a bit away.
I know some people who work at utsw and live in the village,it's about 5-10 minutes away from the best places to hang. but 20 minutes from utsw, and depending on which community you live in either dirt cheap or fairly expensive, the westside and northbridge are the more expensive, but some are in the middle.
Closer to utsw, try the cityville apartments.they're new and very nice.
what's your budget?

Yup, that's kinda high.

I can probably do $700. Just hope I get some fat loans next year.

im a resident at utsw. there is some housing down by love field but i really dont recommend those places. remember texas has no state taxes so u keep what u make . . . so u can afford to pay a little more for better living if u look at it that way . . . but anyway the housing isnt too bad . . . i would recommend living in the uptown area, turtle creek, cedars spring (gay district), SMU/Mockingbird, Deep Ellum . . . i live in Deep Ellum which i like . . . the area itself is ok and is alive during summer and every weekend . . . but the part i like the best is that it is exactly 10 minutes away from both the VA and Parkland . . . a lot of people actually are buying condos here as their are new developments coming up all over the place . . . and a lot of them are affordable . . . one thing i like about living in the area i do is that im pretty much downtown . . . when im post-call or when i want to go out . . . i literally hop in the car or take a cab in 3 minutes ill be where most of the action is happening . . . or i can walk out and ill be in the Deep Ellum culture . . . just somethings to keep in mind. if u just want cheap housing u can always look in the suburbs or around the utsw area . . . but i dont recommend living around parkland . . . oh and what i like is that most apt provide free parking.

I second the Las Colinas area. It's close, and there are choices of houses, townhouses and apartments.
