Just took my DAT on 7/16/11

GPA Overall-3.5 GPAs-3.51 BCP-3.46

PAT-19 (69.4)
QR-18 (86.6)
RC-19 (67.6)
Bio-18 (72.1)
GenChem-22 (95.2)
Orgo-21 (89.7)
TS-20 (91.3)
AA-20 (93.4)

Overall Im content with my scores. I thought it went A LOT worse. If I had to do it all over I would have done things a little differently. Heres my breakdown.

PAT- I just did CDP. Keyholes and ESPECIALLY ANGLE RANKING were harder on the real DAT. Cube Counting and Hole punching were easier. TFE and Pattern folding were on par. One thing I struggled with was TFE visualising so all I did was line count for ALL the CDP tests. But on the real thing it will elimate one or two but not all. My suggestion. Use Line Counting soley at first and overtime you will be able to visualize it. I never got pattern folding well so I left 5 minutes for this and guessed on everything I couldnt get. My scores arent great but im not complaining.

QR- I didnt study too much but if you want atleast an 18 go over the DAT destroyer 150 or so math problems, kaplan practice test. Those are the only things I did. I wish I had gone over trig a bit more cause they had some basic period questions which I forgot. Overall basic questions, I went thru and did the non story probs first. This section is NOT HARD. I spent a composite 3 hours for this section including practice tests. I skimmed the QR of the destroyer and did 1 kaplan test(which helped the most).

RC- I studies a complete 2 hours for this including the practice tests. I was SOOO worried because I was getting 16 and 17s on the practice tests. But on the real thing it was a JOKE, a JOKE. Some of the answers were common sense (super super obvious), and others you could answer with your knowledge of science. I didnt do really well in this section but then again I didnt really study.

Bio- I studies SOOOOO much for this section. And I made flashcards (cuecard program) for every chapter of cliff and the information in KAPLAN WHITE (my sister took program when she applied so I had the book). In the end I just kept reading and didnt get to go thru all my flashcards. But im glad i didnt because the questions were sooo obscure. If I had to do it again. I would have soley used kaplan WHITE not BLUE, white has much more. And I woud have read the chapters in Raven Bio on Genetics and if you had time go over the sections on the body systems. After that just do the AP problems in Cliffs and Barons and dont memorize the answers u got wrong but go back and understand the BIGGER PICTURE. I just felt like this section is luck of the draw, because it really depends on what type of questions you get. I honestly thought I did a lot worse than 18 so even though this wasnt a good score im still satisfied.

Gchem- I took 2 topscore tests and 1 kaplan. The topscore tests are a copy of the material from the kaplan WHITE book questions. I got a 16 and an 18 on this section always running out of time. On the real thing the questions are a lot simpler and not as many calculations. I did Bio section 1st, then orgo, and was left with 43 minutes for Gchem where I relaxed and did the concept and super simple questions first then went back and did the calculation and equation questions. Worked out well in my opinion. I used the DAT destroyer which was useful and WHITE book questions (more useful). To be safe I would go over both but if crushed for time all thats necessary is Kaplan white.

Orgo- I spent like 20 minutes on this. I didnt think I missed any but I probably did something stupid. This DAT Destroyer is overkill but its still really good, dont need to know some of the obscure stuff in there. The KAPLAN class flashcards were really good too. Just know the basics like substit elimination, acid base, function of activator deactivators, and naming (kaplan really good with this). Last thing the DESTROYER LACKS in LAB TECHNIQUES. Read the White or Blue book section on this, its REALLY good and will help with gchem too.

My scores arent stellar like many people on this site but I honestly put a lot of effort into the sciences and PAT. I think its crucial to spend a least the last 2 and a half weeks studying HARD for this test. In general the test isnt very exhausting, It gets over quick.

What is the Kaplan White Book? Is this the one that comes with the course? I am aware of the Blue Book (the one that sells at Barnes & Noble). Can someone elaborate?

Yeah the kaplan review book that comes with the course is white so I'm assuming hes talking about that

My bad, In the PAT section I meant I never got pattern folding well so I lett 5 minutes left.

Thanks tmirchel.

The white book is with the kaplan course. I didnt take it but my sister did so I used hers.

its part of the course material; check out craiglist ebay. someone will sell theirs.

The difference between the white book and the blue book is that the white book has end of chapter questions. I have NO IDEA why they left out the end of chapter questions on the blue book. Those questions are critical to the understanding of concepts.

I guess they want people to buy the blue book, fail the DAT, then pay 1500 to take their class.

OP: Congrats on your score! they look very balanced.

Oh, I have this book from taking the course. I can say that the OC and GC sections of this book are awful but there are some good parts for Bio.

The white book has a extra material for bio (more plant stuff) than the blue book. I have no idea why they didnt put it in the blue book but its def not worth 1500 dollars. You can get that plant stuff from cliffs. But I do think studying the white book has everything in it. Not in the detail for a 21+ (in my opinion you have to be super knowledgeble or really lucky to get that) but enough for a ok to good score (18-20).

I do not know about the course though. My sister took it and didnt do well on the DAT (she did get in though and is a dentist today).

Its not a must that you have the book but make sure to atleast go over the lab technique section in the Orgo portion of KBB. This is one thing I do not think the destroyer covers well at all.

It's weird you feel that way about the GC question. That was my main way of practicing questions, and I got a 22 on the GC on mine. The GC on the DAT is very easy. I was disappointed I didn't get higher. I didn't use destroyer or Chad's, but I'd hardly call the GC section of the white book awful.

OC, I'd agree is lackluster. I thought the bio was weak too as long as you have Cliff's and Schaums. But, everyone learns differently I suppose.

You're right, let me correct myself. It's been a while since I looked at that book. GC is decent. OC is awful to the nth degree. The OC part skips important reactions and the ones they cover, they half-ass it with vague confusing instruction. They only way one can follow and fill in the blanks is if one's OC background is strong.

You guys are all smart. I dont think theres anything bad out there. Do something and do it thoroughly and you should be fine on the DAT. The gchem section is not hard, neither is the organic. And I know I have said this a bunch but make sure to go over that lab technique section in KBB or white. I got questions in Orgo and a question in chem on lab techniques.

thanks dentalworks. I hope you are right. It just seems that for all the schools on predents.com, and here, the average person getting interviews has a aa or ts of 21+ and gpas like 3.6+.

predents at probably less than 5% of the total application pool, plus its self reported therefore not 100% accurate. you should look at the ADA guide instead, that paints a clear and unbiased picture.

I just realized that the information on predents ADA portion is for the 2008 entering class. I have not ordered the recent ADA guide. Does anybody know how much stuff has changed since than. I guessing its gotten a lot more competitive
