So I have a couple questions about my stats and one little thing that is bugging me......

My overall gpa is a 3.95 and my science gpa is a 3.97 so I feel great about that.

I have done plenty of volunteer work, ran support groups, did TA work in cell bio and have what I think are a very nice set of lors.

My dat is the itch I have all would be great except for the QR portion :

PAT : 21
QR: 14
RC: 19
Biology: 18
Gen Chem: 21
O Chem: 19
Total Science: 19
AA: 18

So what does everyone think? Are the DAT scores along with my other stats strong to get into a good school? Am I pushing it or do you think I will have a couple offers? I am not sure how to feel.......I think that I am fine but I need some advice from people that have dealt / heard of the same thing. Thanks for the help everyone.

you should be good. i don't know about the 14 qr. I imagine some schools you won't make the cutoff but others you should be okay. you have an excellent gpa.

I agree with donsaxena. That QR score would keep you out of schools with cutoff scores, but everything else seems solid enough that I would just apply to a bunch of schools. Chances are that at least a couple will be willing to overlook that 14! Do your homework though: look, call, email around to find out who has definite cutoff scores for QR. You don't need to waste your time and money applying to those schools.

They're going to be concerned with your QR for sure and will probably ask you about it during your interviews. Was the QR that you took that difficult? Mine had biology stuff on it...genetics, immunology, micro...etc. Anyways, doesn't matter.

Why is your bio so low for your GPA??? You should be scoring in the mid 20s with that kind of GPA. They may ask you that at the interview, I mean I would if I was an admissions officer.

Overall, not bad. You may want to retake to get better DATs. But you need to perform at the same level or better on the retake. Catch 22 there.

Anyways, good luck 🙂 You should be ok.

Cheers.

Well I love math and I am very good at math......I basically saw a couple problems that presented a challenge and got caught up in the moment.....wasted too much time and therefore ran out of time. I performed with A's in all of my calculus courses......hence why I was upset.

The bio should have been higher, but my bio was very difficult. Large portion of ecology / environment questions and many questions that were not presented in the courses or in the review. I also had question with slides of tissue samples.....and tried my best but with no histology background did not know what to pull together. The bio section had nothing relevant to my courses. No micro, no genetics, no physiology....none.....so that is also a reason why. My program of study focused on biochem, pharmacology, physio, microbio.....none of these things were presented in ANY of my questions. Maybe I just had a crappy bio section.

LIdo-
same here on the bio section. very odd that the bio wasn't a&p, ecology, genetics, micro, etc....I was frustrated to say the least when I was proceeding through the sect.

Hard due to complete curves being thrown...I have an AS in bio, with BS in same...and I also received 18...life rolls on

I'd say your good but from what I've seen with plenty of applicants is sometimes it seems like the admissions board sits at the table, pulls out a file, and throws the dice. I don't know how some of my friends got in and I don't know how some of my friends haven't gotten in. As I'm sure most here would agree, There is no simple formula to assure anything. Just hope the adcom opens my file while they are in a good mood.

I would definitely take the DAT over again--and this time take Kaplan and study! Take plenty of practice tests and get better at time management. With your GPA I would expect at least 22 in every section. Then at interviews you will be the one interviewing the schools.
Also, is any of your volunteer work in a dental office? That's huge for schools.

I am in the same same boat with you. I am actually very surprised to see your profile being very similar to mine. I have TS: 19 and AA:19. The only difference is that my QR is a little higher than yours. My GPA is also very similar to yours and I am working as a TA for the biology department this academic year.

I had a meeting with my Health Professions Advisory Committee, and they were a little concerned with my DAT score. It should have been higher considering my GPA just like yourself. Well, it is my understanding that state schools generally put more weight on the GPA than the DAT scores (I am not sure if this is true for all state schools, but I think it is true for many). So, if you have a state school or several, you should definitely apply to them. You probably have the best chance there as long as your college is somewhat respected in your state 🙂 At least that's what I am hoping for myself. 😀

Good luck to you.

should be ok.... but you should have done better than 18 on DAT if you have a 4.0

jb!🙂

Thank you all for your replies and help. I just spoke with an admission member at a dental school. He told me that I will be fine and all should go well with my application. He said that the QR is not that big of a deal and that all of the other scores, esp pat, were very good. He also noted that my GPA gives a huge push. I am saying this to give any other person out there hope if they are facing the same situation. I also got some private messages from people who faced the same situation and were accepted to not one but multiple schools. GOOD LUCK everyone! Thank you for your help!

Is it inappropriate to ask where you did your undergrad at?
