fantastic news, sunlight8!!!!!!! i'm in the acceptable pool at ucsd and waiting to hear back post-interview (april 😱 ) from davis....

was davis always your top pick over ucsd, or was the decision between the two schools a tough one to make?

Are there alot of UC Davis undergrad alumnis at UCD SOM? I guess I wanna know if they favor those people and to what extent, I went to Davis. Also thanx for all the info posted guys.

I was very impressed with Davis. I'm born and raised in California and this is where I'd ultimately like to live and I can't imagine a better exposure to the state's patient body as a whole than Davis. You really get it all. Also, my wife is an ESL teacher whose career is really taking off and Sac has lots of opportunities. Happy wife = happy med student.

It's going to be tough for me, though. I interviewed April 9th and found out that they do not accept online learning for prereqs, which means I have to scramble to do an early intense summer school schedule and hope that they'll be flexible about the completion cut-off.

So I need to decide if I should give notice to my employer in two weeks so that I can quit my job and start taking classes to satisfy prereqs for a med school that hasn't accepted me, and even if they do, may not give an extension to the deadline for prereq completion. And I'm really reluctant to quit my job because I need every penny I can get to fund a cross country move to Vermont if I don't get in to Davis. Good times...

Loved the med school though. Great vision, great facilities, great faculty, great patients...

It was Davis all the way.

Davis really knocked my knee high pantyhose off. I almost didn't go to the interview because I was so burnt out from this whole process at the time and it was one of my last interview invites. So I went in preparing to be disgruntled and instead it was an amazing interview. The facility was brand new, state of the art (I don't even know where that phrase came from) and of course gorgeous. The population is Sacramento is hugely diverse, happy students and great faculty. It felt like there was a tangible cohesion among the students. I had two really great interviews with people I felt I could connect with. And I won't be in class from 8am-5pm every day.


P.S. San Diego doesn't reject anyone they interview. Instead people get put into an "Acceptable pool" which means they didn't get an outright acceptance. When people decline acceptances they try to "replace" that person with someone who has a somewhat similar background to maintain class diversity.

The whole opposite ends of the country aspect adds some flavor, doesn't it?

I hope it works out for you, it sounds like Davis would be pretty ideal (frantic summer school aside)...

Plus, there's burritos in California.

There's a few from Davis, I think in our class there are about 8 or so (maybe more?)

I wouldn't say they favor the Davis grads or not, but of course it gives you a good advantage as an applicant since you know the area and have a good reason for wanting to stay (family, wanting to practice medicine in your own community, etc.) Plus, more importantly you might know someone or get letters of rec from people that the admissions committee knows and respects.

No. Plenty of people hold acceptances while waiting on a school they'd rather go to. I did. I imagine many of the people in this thread are doing the same.

That said, I have seen two other threads of yours floating around pre-allo on this same exact topic: you got into a school you don't want to go to, and (correct me if I'm wrong) it's the only acceptance you've got at this time. I've held my tongue twice, but I can't help myself anymore!

You need to sit down and really ask yourself what it is you want out of the next four years. What's most important to you? What about the school you've been accepted to makes you balk? Don't ask SDNers what they think; this is not a decision anyone but you can make. If getting your M.D. at this institution would so severely compromise your priorties that you cannot do it, drop your acceptance, but do so with the absolute crystal-clear knowledge that you might not get in this round, nor subsequent rounds. Medical school admissions are a HUGE crapshoot. Please, please, please be sure that you are okay with the worst-case scenario (never being a doctor) before you consider dropping that acceptance.
 
I'm not dropping the acceptance. That would be a bad decision. Just thinking about options and comparing my priorities. 🙂

Good! I'd just seen your other posts, and was worried you were considering reapplying if UCD didn't work out. Seriously though, putting down a deposit to hold a place in another class won't jeopardize your chances at other schools in any way. So, no worries! 🙂
 
What a crock of $hit davis is...I've been waiting since the begining of March and still have heard nothing...

What kind of school treats people like this??

I understand new facilities and all that stuff, but really, how hard is it sending out a 2 line e-mail saying something to the extent of, hey we're taking a long time, and we're still considering you, we hope to let you hear by X date....sorry for the inconvenience.

No wonder people hate doctors...they are a bunch of arrogant pricks who think that they can treat people however they like.

I agree that a little customer service would go a long way. Othere schools I've waited for have sent stuff out every few weeks. It's classy.

Meh... People don't hate doctors because of the type of people running medical schools. People hate doctors because of the type of people medical schools let in.
 
i've been thinking lately. so people say that applying early, interviewing early etc is beneficial. but fnow looking back, i think it's a pain in the ass.

if you're not as qualified for a school, they won't let you in, doesn't matter whether you applied early or not.

if you're an ok candidate, they'll just put you on the waitlist to see what else is out there. and there comes the pain of waiting and waiting and waiting.

that's my short rant of the day. back to finals studying. ugh.

The school utilizes a rolling admissions process. After the interview stage, the admissions committee again reviews applications and makes decisions on a continual basis. We could offer an acceptance as early as October 15 and as late as mid-September. It is important to send in all materials in a timely manner."

i think they are starting a month earlier than usual this year and they probably did not update the website. So we should revise that to meant late July (I think that's when they are starting this year).
 
Is anybody else feeling the pinch of having to commit to your other school? Housing, leases, roommates, etc. (yes our lives are so difficult) +pity+
 
Just wanted to let you guys know that I got into UC Davis. I got a phone call today letting me know. I interviewed on Feb 23rd....so I had been waiting for awhile. I'm really happy right now because I don't have to go all the way to Pittsburgh!
 
Oh my gosh that is great news! Congratulations!!!! Although how depressing for April interviewees that they are still on February applicants. SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH

I guess so. I have visions that they will keep on going through mid-July until class starts and then just throw all the unread applications away.

I sincerely hope they get to you faster than they getting to me; if you are this bitter after two and a half months, seven and a half would probably have you throwing molotov's through UCDs windows.

Hey guys. I found out I got into UC Davis two weeks ago, but have just decided to go elsewhere. It was a really really tough decision though. I withdrew my application today, so one more spot is open. Good luck to you all!! Oh yeahI interviewed at the end of March if that matters.
 
how can it possibly be rolling admissions if accepted applicants interviewed much later than those who have not heard back yet??

but dude, a late march interviewee heard 2 wks ago? wow now this thing is just out of wack. but maybe they're really working hard now?


mr. belding, forget the molotov, you work there, you must have some connections. just sneak into their office late at night, hack into their system and send acceptance letters to all of us. much better than blowing up the spanking new building they just built.
 
I just wanted to say congrats to Steve!! It makes me really happy when a regular poster who has been waiting it out with us is able to share the good news.

And everyone else... hang in there. Mr. Belding and Calcox, we are really holding down the fort after 7+ months now!! The wait can only be, at most, two more months.

hmm i'm an idiot.

i just realized that in the last intent letter i sent to the dean, which i based off of a letter to ucsf i wrote earlier, i forgot to change one "ucsf" to "uc davis"... it was kinda hidden in the middle of the paragraph which is prob why i didn't catch it but gosh...

think i just ruined my chance of getting in?
 
That really sucks, but don't worry about it too much since you can't change it. I have a feeling they are so busy, they aren't bothering to read things we send.

Uh... was it actually a letter of intent ("You are my #1 school and I'll attend yours before any others") or was it a letter of interest ("I sure love your school and would love to come")?

If it's the former, it may raise warning signs, as they may think you're sending these to multiple schools instead of one. If it's the latter, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

And at the end of the day, I'm with kbear on this one: I think they're so busy right now that I wouldn't be suprised if that letter won't be filed until after the decision is made.
 
yea it was an intent letter... uh... well i sent it to davis after i got rejected from ucsf, so i mean it's true. they were my respective #1 schools during those times...

yea i hope they don't notice...

Some medical schools (like UCSF) put some weight into post-interview correspondence and things like LOI's and whatnot. Lots of schools don't put much stock in them. I've heard Davis doesn't put much stock in them.

I'll bet they gloss the letter just enough to see what it is and slap it in your file. I wouldn't worry...
 
I just talked to Lanina and she told me that they still do not intend to review those on hold until after all interviewees have gone through their preliminary review...

As long as there are still people posting waiting to hear back from Feb-April interviews, we are going to be sitting tight.

She said that they are having emergency admissions committee meeting 2-3 times a week to try to catch up and that they are very much in damage control mode. As always, she was very nice but unwilling to give a timeline as the adcomm hasn't been able to adhere to one.

I'm going to need to find a hobby that doesn't involve drinking on weekday mornings, even though it just feels so right in this case...

I love that they are in damage control mode, yet this could have been foreseen many MONTHS ago.

Do you guys think that an actual waitlist will be formed at some point? Or is "hold" all there will be??
 
Question for you:

if they place you on 'hold' do they send a letter? We interviewed in april and haven't heard anything nor recieved anything via snail mail. Do they send out acceptances only by phone or do they send them via postal service--- how about rejections- are they just snail mail?
 
Holds and Rejections are done by email. Acceptances are varied: some have come through snail mail, phone, email, contact from interviewer, and even through the financial aid office when admissions hadn't let someone know they were accepted yet.

Thanx for calling Mr. Belding. I'm still crossing my fingers to come off of hold @ Davis, but if we don't hear back pretty soon, it may be too late for me.🙁 I agree with SalseraDoctora. I'm gonna have to start commiting to my other school as far as accepting financial aid, housing lease, etc. pretty soon.

P.S. It's nice to see some familiar avatars on this thread (diatom85, NDY, kbear12)

Tell me about it. I already paid $985 on a rental deposit in Vermont and need to pony up first month's rent shortly. I signed up with the movers for a July 24th move back east. About to buy air tickets for my wife and I.

And I'll still do a jig if Davis gives me the nod. I feel like a professional victim at heart...
