DDS vs DMD

What are the differences between "DMD" and "DDS" degrees? Which one is more desirable or coveted?

I noticed one of the Dental schools I'm going to apply to offers a DDS.

"The DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) indicates the degree awarded upon graduation from dental school to become a general dentist. There is no difference between the two degrees; dentists who have a DMD or DDS have the same education. Universities have the prerogative to determine what degree is awarded. Both degrees use the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation."

So to sum it up, there is no difference.

Sigh. Can't we just standardize the degree awarded? It confuses not only students, but a lot of the general public thinks there are different types of general dentists out there because they get "different degrees". It kind of fragments the profession to be honest. If it were up to me, all schools would award either a DDS or a DMD and be done with it. Organized dentistry for the win.

Well I heard if you get a DMD you can't do OS, but ortho programs prefer it.


JK. Like everyone said they are the same. Generally, schools that award the degree in Latin do DMD.Schools that do English do DDS.

I refuse to go to a school unless they offer a joint DMD/DDS degree. Otherwise, I will not have a full scope of practice and will be doing my future patients a disservice. I will also bring shame on my family name.

BUT if you get a DMD and get a MD from a OS program, WAIT FOR IT... you'll be a DMDMD.

Are you female? Because I find that many people think the same thing... because when I say that I am going to dental school, they automatically assume that means I'm going to be a dental hygienist.

"Oh a dentist? Is that like a masters degree? Do you have to go to school for that?"

That usually ends the conversation right there.

Fact.

I just told work I'm leaving at the end of June because of dental school. My boss said "oh, are you gonna be a hygienist?"

FWIW, I'm male. My boss is male. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the majority of hygienists are female. I was like really? Dental school does not equal hygiene school. Haha
 
^Not directing at you in particular. I love how some first year dental students or even predents already have this preconceived notion of hatred of being mistaken for a hygienist already. Who cares? Let them think whatever they want. People think I'm a nurse all the time. If you work in a GP office, bulk of your income may very well come from your hygiene productions. If you treat your auxiliary staff like shet as though you're above them, good luck trying to make it.
 
Whoa, whoa...DDS sounds WAAAAAYYYY better than DMD. To me, DDS has always, and always will mean 'dentist'. When I first heard of DMD, I assumed it must be a midlevel or something (like a PA for dentistry), because DDS = dentist, so anything else must be 'not-dentist'.

Turns out the world is actually ******ed stupid (oh crap, right, we're not supposed to use that one now even though saying 'stupid' or '*****' is literally the last generation's equivalent of it and a generation from now '******ed' will be the colloquial term and they will have come up with a new term for the medical problem because they wanna pretend we're PC). Thanks, Harvard, hope you feel super special inside for that one 🙄

I had this happen to me at work. This guy has his masters in physical education (he is a PE teacher) and kept telling me good luck on my masters.... I told he four times that to be a dentist you need your doctorate but he didn't listen.

So good luck everyone on your masters to become a fake doctor!

^^^ agree haha. It seems that a lot of people confuse RN with CNA by just using the all inclusive "nurse" too.
